Electric Car News

Everyone who know Itsbob IRL knows his love of EVs. I've been waiting for his opinion on how its working (or not) for him during his winter trips north. I do trust his opinion.

Interestingly enough, Itsbob shared his disappointment in use of the EV in the winter months. He too, agrees it can be nothing more than a secondary vehicle.

Sadly, legislation is not taking into account the average Bob cannot afford to park his EV for a portion of the year without having ICE backup.

My best friend lives in Finland so I like to read some Finnish news from time to time. Right now, they have a cold spell - temps not getting above 0*F. I just found this concerning EVs in Finland in winter. Read the comments.

That's why Tesla got into the insurance business.

Mirrors Itsbob’s experience. Not holding charge, takes much longer to charge up, and the increased demand for electric resulted in facilities increasing the cost per wattage noticeably. He said the increase in time it took to charge compounded with more frequent stops to recharge means he won’t be doing that again.

Good thing he has a choice in vehicles he can chose to drive… for now.

Even with a hybrid MPG goes down quite a bit, however this can be mitigated somewhat. Mine has NiMH batteries , Toyota switched some to Lithium, but if I remember correctly the ones destined for Canada are still Nickel Metal because it performs better in the cold.

Some of the mitigation is don't turn on the heat until the ICE warms up naturally and the biggest is to park in the garage overnight.

Batteries just don't work that efficiently when cold, Lithium are particularly susceptible to cold weather performance issues.

A lot of this will be covered by reading my response to SD.

1. A lot of places have already implemented a road tax like thing for EVs. Some red states are even making them punishing compared to gas taxes you might pay for an ICE vehicle. I do agree, EVs should pay their fair share to maintain the roadways. How to farly do that is an issue. Nobody want a mileage tax. But how each does you get them to pay equal to what use they put to the roads? Still going to have to go pretty hard to erase the advantage that powering an EV has.

2. See the article I attached to my response to SD. Best data so far looks like 25% to 30% is crazy high for degradation. More in the 15%-20% range I think. Those high numbers, like SDs lifespan numbers, come from the Nissan Leaf experience I think.

3. Yep, people hold em or sell them, and other people buy them. But few make it past 300K, can we agree on that? So, if say 30%-40% of these get to 300K without needing a battery, would you call that equivalent to ICE?

4. This argument is based on degradation numbers that so far have not surfaced for modern EVs. See above. And keep in mind, Tesloop abused the crap out of those batteries.
I'm pretty sure someone abused the crap out of you, or at the very least dropped you on your head! LOL

Ah, that's why I disagree with you...... only brain damaged people would do that....... Hmmm, sounds like liberal thinking..... :)

Hey don't kid yourself liberals think sometimes, just not very well and certainly not on IMPORTANT subjects!

This got me thinking when you said we are on a peninsula and no where to go. What about hotels if I'm visiting this area? Don't geeks visit their geek friends or go to geek places? So I just did a quick search of the Fairfield Inn at Gate 1 - I don't see anything on their website about car chargers. Wouldn't the Naval Air Museum be a good place for a charger? That's government money so I would assume there would be one there.
The Naval Musuem does have a charger. There are also a few at St. Mary's College, and in back of the old LexPk library to name a few local places. Between our house and our barn, we have four car chargers, and are on a registry that someone looking for a charge in our area can contact us for an opportunity to "fuel" up (for a fee 😀).

One reason not to get the govt to do these things. Like the stupid plan to place the new ones in front of the furniture store on GMR.
I went there the other day, that parking lot sucks to begin with. The abandoned gas station on the corner of Chancellors would be a great place, doesn't the county own that now?

Only way to go is to have Pay-only charging stations. Absolutely NOT free charging station.
A lesson can be learned from the free vs. pay tire air pumps at gas stations. When was the last time you saw a broken pay air pump at a gas station vs. a free one? People just don't give 2 shitz about it when its free.

The cables would be cut and sold for scrap before the sun rose the second day.

Concur with Kyle. Also you do NOT want to be hanging there for any real length of time. And I say having lived for 10 years in the first house I bought and still own a 1/2 mile up the road. The 7-11 across the street, sure. The key being that you want to be in a well lit area with lots of foot traffic and cameras.

Yep, thats why Electrify America is such complete crap. VW was forced to build it as a penalty project for Dieselgate.

Today, at the A&W in Callaway, where the diesel pump also runs so slowly you can watch the 1/1000th digit in the gallons click over. Some people just don't give 2 shitz regardless.
