So would I start this job asap or would I have to wait a few weeks?

I would think that most places have non-classified work that you can do until your clearance comes through. Unless there's nothing but classified work, chances are you can start right away. Or sometimes only a small part of a project is classified, and you're free to work on the remaining non-classified portions of the project.

It all depends.

If I did start this job and for some odd reason the clearance came back negative a whole year to year and a half later, would I just get booted out of the job?

Most likely.

How does this whole thing work, really?

Sad to say but yes, they'd boot you. In some cases they'll move a hardworking employee to another position that does not require a clearance, but if there's nothing available..... That's why the job announcement states "must be able to obtain a SECRET clearance."

Thanks guys, learn a bit everyday.

As Badgirl suggested, if I don't hold a criminal record and I pay my bills on time I should have no trouble at all?

I have a friend that has been actively seeking employment in the Lexington Park area for a year now. He has a Bachelor's degree and clean history, but hasn't been able to pick up a professional job. Do you think its a who you know atmosphere around here instead of what you know? Most people tell him that he didn't get the job because of lack of experience. I had the same problem when I was actively seeking full time permanent employment. Answer me this...How in the world do you gain experience besides learning and applying yourself in the classroom if you've been going to school full-time? I see people with no experience and NO education get great jobs because of someone they know. Just isn't fair. :smack: It almost makes you feel like a degree is just a piece of paper.
What's his degree in? Greek and Roman Mythology?? Basket Weaving? FIlm Studies??

I don't think that bills being paid on time is a big weighty factor. They look at it, because if you're too deeply in debt, you might sell out national security for some quick dollars, which makes you an unacceptable risk.

But if you've missed a phonebill here and there, or don't make car payments on time every single month, I don't think that would be a huge detriment to getting a clearance.

And I also don't think that a criminal record even bars you - depending on what is there. I think that any felony disqualifies you, but some misdemeanors, particularly those that don't involve stealing or violence, are not necessarily going to disqualify you.

The whole thing about clearance that they look for is "what kind of a risk to national security is this person?"

Things like larcony and theft paint you as someone who would sell out the country for some money. Things like DWI or drug charges paint you as someone who is unreliable and will likely sell out their country without even knowing it.

An indecent exposure charge for streaking a football field when you were 18 might be overlooked.

I don't know that for sure, as I have no firsthand experience.

Toxick has made some good points... DWI I can loose my clearance and I would loose my job..

There is a guy thats has been waiting 2 years now, longer than I have been with this company to get his T/S. Why... he missed 2 months of his student loans.... and he may not get his clearance... It would really suck big time if they denied him because of that. But they have a reason for everything obviously.... just sometimes sucks to be in that situation

It's a serious question.. Depending on what ihis degree is, determines if it's worth the paper it is printed on. Did he take a hard course of study, or did it he take the easy path so he could party more?

If he had a degree in EE.. or CS and few others (WITH a decent GPA). he would have no problem finding a job here. If he has a "dime a dozen" degree, then keep on looking.

I don't see how asking someone what their degree is in is childish.

A dime a dozen.. no offense. GPA over 3.0?? Probably competing for jobs with people that have technical degrees. Will be hard to compete.

I got my job down here over the web. I was living in Mass, and had loaded my resume one day, and had a phone call 10 minutes later from a company that wanted to interview me. I also had the job the same day I interviewed.

Oh and I have no degree yet(currently a senior), but I had years of a technical background and working in the field.

Oh and don't think getting a degree in IT will automatically get you in the field either. He needs experience with that also.

For whoever's DH is getting his degree in IT and hoping to get on help desk soon! That is the way to go, work your way into it!

Most of those jobs I see in there you can get with any degree or no degree at all (like airport security guard). If you are going to give a college lots of money and time you should make it count in my opinion.

I have always viewed southern maryland as a great place for people that dont have college degrees. A good technician can make $85k a year with the government, more with managerial training. My boss has no college degree, it did take him a long time to get to where he is though.
