Expired Driver's License

Anyone happen to know what the fine is for driving on an expired license? I just realized mine expired a few day ago and won't be able to get it renewed until Monday. Just trying to figure out what I'm looking at if I do get pulled over. Thanks!

Wait, I have 30 days from the day it expires to get a new one? There's no mention of that on the MVA website.

According to them...

"Marylanders renew their driver's licenses every five years and you must have a valid Maryland driver's license at all times if you are a resident of Maryland and are driving a vehicle."

When mine expired in January, my friend the cop, told me I had 30 days.

I think I'll give the barracks in Leonardtown a call, see if the duty officer can give me an answer either way. Thanks for the replies Rose!

Can you renew it online? If so, you'd be able to print out a confirmation that you paid. Not sure if that's possible with a DL, did it with my registration last month after procrastinating too long.

According to the guy I spoke with at the Leonardtown barracks, there is no grace period. It's a $60 fine for driving with an expired license, no points.

I could have if I had done it 15 days prior to it expiring. Once it's expired, you have to appear in person to get it renewed.

Guess you better stay home or get someone to drive you around. Or just drive really carefully and hope you don't get pulled over!

Ahhhh, good to know. Looks like you'll be spending Monday morning at the mva. :ohwell:

You may have to take the driving test again since you let it expire. I don't know if there is a grace period for that. If this is the case you may have to make an appointment and have someone with a current license drive you there. A friend of mine let hers expire about twelve years ago and when I took her up to Waldorf to get it renewed she failed the written test so we had to go back the next day.

My brother had his expire, and he had to take the test all over again just as though he was a new driver! That was just a year ago.

Mine expired in June, TOTAL oversight on my part and I did not renew until August........I did not have to pay a fine or retake a test. I am sure if I got pulled over there would have been a fine but as far as MVA, I only had to pay the normal renewal fee and that was it. Good luck.

I wonder if your insurance still covers if you get into an accident without a valid license? that would make you an uninsured motorist and we condemned all those people to Hell in a previous thread ....lol

You have a year to get a new one before you have to re-take all the tests.

Interesting question. I don't know the answer to that one.
