Explosive Noise Heard Late Afternoon Today

Heads should roll...

Once again, this was a major screw up by the range, flight crew and test engineers.

Once they were notified of sonic booms hitting land they should have "Knocked It Off".

While I don't have a copy of Pax Rivers Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in front of me, I'm fairly certain that it states that Sonic Booms will be mitigated by keeping them over the water. It probably also states that if Sonic Booms do hit land they will immediately stop testing.

I for one am dedicated to minimizing the NAS impact on the local citizens. :patriot:

If lose our airspace or the west coast is successful in taking over all flight testing then I'm out of a job.:cussing:

For more info visit:

later... it time to go to the Tiki bar and freeze my butt off:otter:

The did, when advised of the adverse impact and someone in authority made the decision. The test wasn't completed.

:bs: The booms are being mitigated by attempting the project on an approved profile. You do realize that the term "mitigated" does not mean that there will be no sonic booms at all. We conduct many supersonic events each year and occassionally there is an impact to the local community. It is minimized as much as possible as it is important that we impact the inhabitants as little as possible. But this is RDT&E with supersonic aircraft, booms will happen. With that said, you can be assured that this profile is being re-evaluated and more than likely will not be used again.

If lose our airspace or the west coast is successful in taking over all flight testing then I'm out of a job.:cussing:
Can you explain how, because of a sonicboom within restricted airspace created and existing solely for test and evaluation, we would lose the airspace?

California is continually trying to shut down Pax River and Eglin.

Commander Fleet Forces Command believes that NAS Oceana will need to be closed soon due to noise impact upon its neighbors.

FAA is continually trying to whittle down our airspace to allow faster and easier transit of commercial aircraft in the NE corridor.

If we screw up too many times and annoy our neighbors or kill somebody on our range like Vieques, then we are toast.

I for one would like to stay here in SOMD versus Ridgecrest, CA.

I am not one of those involved with the impact studies or involved with the testing. Just my opinion here as a local citizen - Those of you that are crying about the noise should move. This base is a test base, if the a/c tests can not be conducted successfully here without people whining, that will be the cause the of base testing facilities moving to Elgin not the rare occurance of sonic booms. You all just need to get a grip and quit making a mountain over a molehill, it is not like it happens regularly. :flowers:

Is this news or something? I pay attention at work too and have read many stories about our predicted demise that many fortell. I also know about the FAA, was at the meeting for the new route they wanted (notice, "wanted", meaning didn't get) and have known they have forever wanted our airspace. They want it all everywhere. But it won't happen. Even if all of the RDT&E moves, which is highly unlikely, the Test Pilot School, as well as other activities, will be here and they will need the airspace or are you just closing down the entire station?

You need to get a grip and understand that it was just four booms (this time, there will be more). I’ve heard rumor of some minor property damage and I’m sure someone’s hens won’t be laying eggs, but no one was killed and no one was hurt. At least we aren't lobbing bombs into trailer parks or shooting schools. Did they shut down either of those activities that have done that? Nope, they're still running.

"Be careful what you wish for"

Some :loser: Puerto Ricans complianed about the bombing range, at Viegues island, after a civillian was killed in the area. This person was not suposed to be there at the time. So they finally got what they wished for, the Navy stopped using Vieques. So the United States Navy said we no longer need Roosevelt Roads. And it was closed. Wiping Ceiba, Puerto Rico off the map.

Had some good times on detachments to Rosey Roads myself. :otter:

huh...

Have you ever heard of the NO vote in T&E.

It was exercised many times but the range controller decided to continue anyway.

Hmmm.... I wonder who the range controller that day. You work in that area, do you know who was controller that day.

I know exactly what the "No-Vote" is for. You say that it was exercised? :bs: :liar: Yeah, I know exactly who was controlling, who the safety officers were, and they will all attest that there was not a “no-vote” given. Back it up, mouth.

Ken,

Do you remember what your reply was when I notified you of this EIS infraction?

You do not have permission to allow sonic booms over populated areas. What don't you get? I warned you that it was happening and you lied to me and continued your test.

I agree. I for one get all giddy anytime there is a high volume of flights going on. To me, it's just the coolest thing EVER. :patriot:

There was no infraction by the test team, everything was performed as briefed and, even though I do not know who you are, there was never a no-vote issued by anyone including you. Your assessment is wrong regarding the sonic booms, they do happen regularly and this flight was never supersonic over land so therefore was not over a populated area.

"Just My Opin"

I think you two have gone too far already in a public forum. This should be dicussed in a PM at least :duel: :boxing:

You are already getting close to saying things that just should not be said HERE?

Exactly! :yay: :patriot: It sounds like saltydog is a little irked that someone must have shot him down (so to speak). I do know that he is not showing a certain form of professionalism by bringing out base business into a public arena like this. I find it "look at me" I am important! :loser:

You are right, I'll let FAA, EPA, NAS Police, Command Council and JAG make their determinations.

That's an appropriate response, but when the airfield closes and 5000 jobs leave Pax River, who are you going to blame? This self-important A-hole, or the persons responsible for disturbing the peace in two counties.

Oh good grief. It was a sonic boom, it's not like someone dropped a Daisy Cutter on your house. :drama:

Give him a double shot PreP! One of my fondest childhood memories was fishing down there with my dad on a hot summer day. Planes were flying over all day. We were having blast watching them and then he broke the sound barrier and I almost fell in the water. It was one of the coolest things I've ever witnessed and my WWII vet dad raised his beer up to the pilot. :patriot:
