Good Night Salty!! :notworthy

Email me directly and lets compare experience in Supersonic Flight Test, F-14 Flight Test, F/A-18 Flight Test, Stores Separation, Range Operations and Enviormental Impact Statements. We'll let the forum decide who is ignorant!!!!

Routinely Derailed
I'm amazed at how impassioned this discussion became. I wish I had never said, "they're not supposed to do that." For my part in fueling the flames of this discussion, I'm truly sorry. The work being done at PAX is of very high importance to our country and to folks who live around here. The "Sound of Freedom" gang includes me. This was IMHO a minor incident and our discussions of it seem to be magnifying it - and I'm truly sorry if I came down on the wrong side here.

Morning Ken:huggy:. That was one point exactly, it's been soooo long since I heard one of these that it scared the poop outta me. I didn't run to call the base or police, I did look out the window and called a girlfriend. I also had a friend in the tower that afternoon that I PM'd and he said they were booms. Now if it happens again I will still jump out of my skin and look out the window but know what it was.
Morning morganj614. We don't conduct many profiles that result in the sonic booms impacting the western shore often. It has been years since a planned test resulted in one. There is always the occassional slip by other users of the areas that sometimes generate a boom and we work to minimize them also.

The range is an excellent partner with our neighbors, our safety practices and policies are some of the best I have been associated with in the nearly 30 years I have been doing this type of work. This specific profile was planned, briefed and blessed by the senior safety personnel at the range and many others of high stature that approved the test plan and at no time was there a danger to the local populace because of what we were doing. Even though it was approved this profile is undergoing extensive scrutiny and will probably be scrapped or significantly modified to achieve less of a chance for the sonic booms being felt.

I offer this to all, there will be more sonic booms in the future. Hopefully only those out on their boats will feel or hear them as that is what we try our best to do, direct the sound focus either up or down the bay away from the populace. But if it is a lovely day there is alway the chance that someone will be out there going over Mach 1.

Yep, that is why they happen, but has anyone found a law that says they are illegal for military operations within restricted airspace? :tap:
I don't think most people are as anal as Salty to even look! :killingme
Most people that live around a military base should come to expect it whether announced in advance or not. JMO

Yes!!! I Just Wanted to Know What Happened!!!

They have broke the sound barrier around here before, and it has not become a major public complaint. Someone posted a tread here saying they heard a "Noise" and just wondered what is was. And now that they know. They are pobably saying, "COOL" "AWSOME" "I WISH I SAW IT". They are not talking about calling their congressman or nothing. Just wondering what it might have been. "somdfan" just wanted to know if anyone else may have heard it and was wondering what it was. As far as whether the airplane was over land or not is not the issue(I doubt it was over land). It's not like they did a low level 200' off the ground and blew all the windows out in Wildewood. It was a "BOOM" off in the distance, like thunder, yes it will make the windows rattle a little, just like thunder, but nobody was hurt and there was no reported damage.

RELAX SALTY

Now that I know what the explosive noise was, if/when I hear it in the future, it won't be so shocking.

C'mon people, lighten up!

Actually, yes I do, but you'd be my best friend if you had the pull to send a few fighters over to do some sonic booms right over my house. :flowers:  LOVE IT LOVE IT LOOOOOOOVE IT. :patriot:

Speaking of Dahlgren when we had our earthquake here in Maryland, I just thought it was Dahlgren.

Read your Position Description on the Range Operations Manual

Ken King said:
What is the point you are trying to make? I see we have an EIS, no dispute here. I see the Navy has a program requiring EIS, no dispute here. I see a Supreme Court decision reversing a lower court decision that was attaching liability to sonic booms as damage caused by what had been deemed as trespassing.

You do understand, and I think most on here realize, that it is the Navy's practice to avoid sonic booms that impact the public to the maximum extent practicable, but where does a law prohibit it as you claim?

During flight test unforseen circumstances will occur. If everything happened according to the test plan, we wouldn't need Range controllers. The aircraft could take off and perform their test events and land.

Read your PD, the Range Operations Manual and the EIS. It is YOUR responsiblty to enforce them.

The supersonic corridor is specifically designed to keep the majority of the sonic boom over water. Unfortunately for you, the atmospherics weren't in your favor that day. The majority of the boom hit a 10 mile strech of land. Car alarms, house alarms and frightened citizens all deluged the 911 system. What if there was a real police or fire emergency in the county? It would be difficult to reach 911 with all of the calls from citizens and alarm companies.

If you were waiting for the "Powers that be" to make a call, then its way too late. Who were you waiting to call, ADM Massenburg or the CNO himself? As the Range controller on this flight it was YOUR responsiblity to make sure this didn't happen. You had numerous phone calls after the first boom and you choose to continue anyway. That action was reckless and negligent.

This cavalier attitude that you think you have permission to allow sonic booms over land leads me to question ability to make decisions in other issues, specifically Safety of Flight. There's plenty of issues to raise here but if everyone has the attitude that "it was an approved test plan" or "it was an approved profile"' then this is going to be the tip of the iceberg with safety problems at the range.

Admit that you screwed up and I'll leave it at that.

Hey Hemorrhoid,

Within my postition description is a statement about enforcing environmental laws on the Air Station, along with other things like EEO and OSH etc. I get paid a lot of money to be anal about infractions against policy and law.

Once you grow up and get a position of responsibility maybe you'll understand. Until that time you know where to put the PrepH. :whip:

OK, so you're an avionics tech for Dyncorp who works at Strike (VX-23). Tell me how many test plans have you written or reviewed. How many EIS or FONSI 's have you authored or reviewed. If you need to look up what a FONSI is then you've just disqualified yourself to comment about Environmental Impacts!

Oh I am sorry I didn't know I was dealing with such an important person! :notworthy I hope when I grow up I can hopefully find a job half as important as yours! Hey maybe I could start my own company... naw that would never happen. But now maybe you should worry about who on the base will read this Monday, that is a little more important than you. Better start puckering honey! :moon:

Hey roid,

I'd be worried if I was the one responsible for the sonic booms instead of someone who tried to stop them.

Took a look at your previous posts...

I was most amused at this one:

This is the way we wash our clothes
Wash our clothes, wash our clothes
This is the way we wash our clothes
So early Monday morning

This is the way we iron our clothes
Iron our clothes, iron our clothes
This is the way we iron our clothes
So early Tuesday morning

This is the way we mend our clothes
Mend our clothes, mend our clothes
This is the way we mend our clothes
So early Wednesday morning

This is the way we sweep the floor
Sweep the floor, sweep the floor
This is the way we sweep the floor
So early Thursday morning

This is the way we scrub the floor
Scrub the floor, scrub the floor
This is the way we scrub the floor
So early Friday morning

This is the way we bake our bread
Bake our bread, bake our bread
This is the way we bake our bread
So early Saturday morning

This is the way we go to church
Go to church, go to church
This is the way we go to church
So early Sunday morning

Got any more words of wisdom?

Please don't post any more pictures of your ugly dogs in halloween costumes. I almost got sick! :killingme

Bustem' Down

Give Peas a Chance
All I know is that it scares the crap out of my dogs every thime it booms. Then I spent 10 minutes fishing them out from under the bed! :killingme
