Someone told me that Facebook plans to start charging for the use of the service. Is this true?

If there is another thread about this I didn't find it as there are many mentions of Facebook in threads here.

Yes, it's true. They plan to make you buy "minutes" to use while browsing FB. You can buy a cluster of minutes at a time or you can "pay as you."

And if they implement a fee system, that will be the beginning of the end for Facebook. People will be hesitant to pay for something they've gotten for free all this time.

I certainly wouldn't be willing to pay for minutes to browse FB pages. I also am not hooked into FB the way some people are. It can stay or go as far as I care. Is MySpace still up? Maybe people would go back to that?

Facebook will never charge you... because it already does - Yahoo! News
Facebook doesn’t need your money because it’s got something way more valuable – your data. Why would the site risk the ire of its users who are providing it content that it then turns into ad revenue? One of the risk factors Facebook identified is that it’s facing increasing competition, and paid subscriptions would ward off new users and drive them elsewhere. From a business perspective, Facebook has everything it needs in your data.

In My Opinion
There was a rumor that floated a while back, and proved to be false.
this new one comes from an anylist that says once facebook goes public it will have to be responsible for investor profits, his personal thoughts are that charging could come.
He goes on to "Guess" that they might charge for a premium level of service that would give the user greater security. again, his imagination and has nothing to do with the actual facts.
He also says that users could expect to experience more agressive advertising on the site to increase revenue for Facebook. ( my personal thought is that this is likely.)

Last statement from Facebook is that they will never charge for belonging. They do not however comment on the adverstising end of it.

however, my thoughts are that Facebook has the right to do what they feel is in their best financial interest, if they up the advertising It could bring in more revenue. Their choice.
The user has a choice not to use, but remember, even if you deactivate your account, all of the posts and information are still on the facebook servers, there is no way to totally remove yourself, your pictures, or your information from them.

So, in short. No, they will not be charging.

I beg to differ. I got charged by Facebook.

I got off with just probation though.

Fair enough. Why does it not surprise me that you found a way to get in trouble with Facebook.

To expound on my simple 'no' though: Facebook's recent S-1 filing refers numerous times to the reality that they don't charge users for having Facebook pages. I'm fairly certain that if they planned on changing that they would have felt obliged to indicate that - or at least suggest it as a possibility - in the filing. Considering the purpose of that filing, I think it would be negligent to not do so.

I do not believe that Gilligan would ever do anything that could be construed as trouble. He's just misunderstood, that's my position and I'm sticking to it.

Here, let me help. I posted something similar on my page one day, because I was annoyed as hell with the stupid #### floating around. So, keep this for future reference.

Facebook is never going to charge you.. they will never, ever ask you to copy and paste a status, never. Ever. Also, all of those pictures of disfigured children are a freaking hoax. No hospital is holding a childs (insert life saving surgery ) hostage if they don't get enough "likes" that will never happen, it is unethical in the extreme. Also, anything that asks you to copy and paste as your status to win a blank..or save a life or blah blah..there's no way they can possibly track it..its not true. Victorias secret isn't giving away giftcards, you aren't going to change facebook "back to the way it was" and you can't track who visits your page and you are not going to change the color. I probably haven't covered everything, but as a general rule treat things as hoaxs and scams.

You're welcome.

I don't check it that often now and I'm about to cut back more when they change over to the stupid "timeline" format. :boo:

You know, for some weird reason, everyone feels like they have to change things now. I hope they stop soon...

I'm getting real tired of change.... (especially change for the sake of change & not change because there's a real actual, not perceived, need.)

 I like change. I like the way it jingles in my pocket. I prefer quarters, but nickles are ok too. Dimes don't make much noise. Pennies smell funny.

Agree with you about the pennies -- must be the copper. I've never liked nickels. I think it's because they are bigger than dimes but are worth less and that never made any sense to me. Size is important...
