Fall/Winter Dinners

Lots of disgusting things that are edible. Grubs, maggots, spiders, snakes. In Iceland I had some shark that smelled like ammonia and tasted worse. Thailand, it was grasshoppers, which are pretty darn good. In Germany, we were pretty sure someone switched the schnapps and lighter fluid jugs but all the food was good.

I forgot one of the worst, to me, is black pudding. How people in the UK love that and blood sausages is beyond me.

Wasn't there a show on television about a guy who ate gross things. Grizzily something maybe?
Or you can raise your right hand and see the world. Big thing to learn, always let your host eat first. That way you know they aren’t blowing smoke about how good something is. Of course, once in a while you still get fooled. Grubs do not really taste like almonds.

Saw that on tv show once. Greenland shark. Toxic when consumed without being fermented and hung to dry for months.

Yea. It was biting into the "bulb"/head that weirded me out.

Why would you want to eat that? When did you eat that? My dad forced venison on me just once. I cried during the whole ordeal.

I was at a wild game dinner and they had it. The entire thing is like the dark meat from a turkey. Moist and delicious.

I've got a freezer full of venison so eating wild game doesn't really bother me too much.

I'm trying to picture you eating an octopus "leg"? Do you cut them? Do they stop wiggling when you cut them? Are they still wiggling when you're biting into them? Do you even eat them with a knife and fork or is it more like a chicken drumstick? I need visuals Gilligan. Surely you have meme for this.

Only chopsticks where I work over there. And it's legs...plural..they have quite a few, you know. At my favorite beer bar near Ch'ung Mu, they'd bring out plate after plate of fresh seafood to snack on...little plates. You'd hear "clack clack clack" of a knife on a cutting board in the back and around the corner would come the hostess with your plate full of octopus legs, wiggling frantically and remarkably successful, still, at motivating off and away from your plate. Ya hadda be quick.

Raised my right hand four times. Only left the states once though and only got as far as the Azores. Only ate out once over there, the reservists got all the liberty, the active duty staff worked their asses off. I don't remember what I ate something beefy that someone tried to explain to me what it was - still to this day don't know. It was delicious whatever it was. They had bulls or steer or something in the streets there and the local wine was really good. George the Crook - that's where we had it.
Surprised you didnt get grilled sardines or Lapas (clams). AND you didnt try the local beer or passion fruit liqueurs? o_O

I absolutely love to cook but I am tired of summer dinners. I am sooooo looking forward to fall/winter dinners. I especially love one pot meals and soups. Anyone have any great recipes that they want to share?

Best thing about winter cooking is the massive batches of chili and ham/bean soup we make..the coming years pork sausage..venison and beef go in the freezer and both require lots of sampling of course...

Finished boiling and slicing the last of the country hams from last year.....new ones hang until this time next year.,

Corona and chili, no wonder the office staff love you.

The combination is remarkably....uh...energetic... The ham and bean soup is no slouch in the "significant amplification of audible methane releases" either.

Ooh, have a good recipe to share? Ive tried a couple and none have seemed quite right.
This is one I do from scratch, so no formal recipe. Usually chop up Tomatoes/Red, Yellow and Orange Bell Peppers/Onion and saute in garlic. Add plenty of Cajun Seasoning and some Chicken Broth. Chop up smoked sausage or andouille if available and continue to simmer. Make rice and pour over.

This has more broth than a true Jambalaya, but it is really good. I have also used the Zatarans boxed one, but I like the home made better.
