Merely claiming to represent him is not enough.

Matthew 7:15-20 15"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? 17Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

Galatians 5:22-23 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, self-control.

Ephesians 2:8-9 8For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Christ said many things. Not all of them were meant to be taken literally. this doesn't make them any less true. Many fundamentalists have a way of taking christ's words so literally that it borders on ludricrous.

though i know I am going to get flamed for this. I would suggest that Christ's true message was that we are all the sons and daughters of God. The gospel of thomas seems to varify this with passages like "the kingdom of heaven is in you and all around you." This isn't a popular view because it undermines the churches authority.

The central teaching behind the hindu philosophy of Vedanta is that "I am God" CAREFUL, this doesn't mean the king of the universe--that's the western view of God. It means that you are the universe expressed as a conscious entity. incidentally it also means that you are perfectly capable of making your own decisions.

If christ had gone about india saying "i am god," he may have been congratulated for grasping Vedanta and little more.

It is not unusual for people with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia to think they are Jesus Christ. In our culture, it is impossible for an individual to be God, thus the confusion. They begin to think that they are the king of the universe and get themselves into all sorts of trouble. In some parts of India, they might be congratulated for grasping Vedanta and little more more.

if i seem to lack any cohesive perspective, it's probably because i don't have a perspective in the ordinary sense. that's mysticism for you, it's impossible to explain within the limits of language, you can only know it through direct experience. good luck, it's definately not for everyone.

i might add that i am not married to the above comparison between the work of christ and vedanta but it's an opinion held by some that is just as valid as any other. the universe is indifferent to your definitions.

I am impressed ! You seem to comprehend the word very well.
At one time I felt the same as you because I hated the hypocrisies of religion , frankly they still make me want to puke.
However I have come to the understanding , that for every group of moral decay you must have a anti group. Good vs Evil.
For every Positive you have a negative and visa versa with everything in life.
Love , Hate ...God ,Devil ...Heven , Hell...Life ,Death
The problem with organized groups of people is they twist things and believe what they twist to beat the opposing group.
Another words if you got a group of idiots and that group of idiots convinces all the idiots that someone is a witch , well some woman ends up being toast.
Guess what nothing has changed as of date.
Moral of this story is...Its OK the believe in God without following idiots.

Another reason I felt the same as you , was because no matter how many times I read the New Testament I realize I am going to hell , because there is no way in hell I can live up to those standards.
Repentance yea OK right , Like on Judgment day God isn't gonna look at people and say ,,Yea but you kept doing it over and over like it was insurance coverage. It don't work that way.
Well something happened in my life for me to believe in God again and the New Testament , I threw away the old one and I keep my butt out of Church's.
And have excepted the fact that everyone is more than likely going to hell
Especially those that are in groups of idiots that tell others our way !
This includes all groups .
At lest on Judgment day I can explain to God I didn't follow or listen to Idiots as in your above post and that the world is full of them so I had to do it alone.
So just maybe he might have some pity on me and not throw my butt into the lake of fire called hell along with Jimmy Swagart , Billy Gram and a bunch of other TV money grubbing Idiots along with a bunch of Popes and 2A

You read the Bible enough , I am sure you have read the passage that will condemn you to hell. However if you are putting a blind eye to this part , in which you more than likely are I shall point it out for you .
I am really surprised that with all the finger pointing back at you that no one has pointed The totally obvious out to you .

it would do you well to realize that i'm no more an idiot than you are. i can admit that i'm an idiot, can you? or you could just say that we are both human and share seperate views. i have fringe beliefs, because i spent the first half of my life being traumatized by fundamentalists. now i am my own person. i hate violence, in all forms and don't feel it is ever justified. that is my point of departure.

If God judges me to be a false prophet, I pray that He will move His people to stone me to death which is the Biblical punishment for false prophets. I would rather die than falsely claim that one word is from God.
