family cars

What are everyone's recommendations for the best family cars? Anyone looking to buy a new car or bump up to a bigger one? I've been working with Volkswagen as of late, and I got to test drive their new Routan two weeks back (the one from all the Brooke Shields commercials ). It's probably the nicest minivan I've been in in years (I used to drive a 96' Dodge Caravan), so I just wanted to get some insight on what everyone else drives or is looking to drive to haul the fam around.

Hah.. I drive an Accord. It's two doors, and can barely fit more than three people in it. Good car, not good for moving people.

I had a 2004 Chrysler Town and Country when I had my twins [also had a 18 month old] and it was very practical. Easy entry and exit [lower to the ground for the little one and easy for me to snap the 2 carriers into their bases].

We upgraded to an Expedition last Summer -- It's not great fuel wise but I like it alot better than my van. My children are a bit older now [3 year old twins, 5 year old].

I've seen the commercials for the Volkswagen. Looks nice. :yay:

I love my Pacifica. It's hard to see out of the back though. I will surely mow someone down backing out of a parking space one day. :ohwell:

Uh...they make them in 4 door. I'd highly recommend the Toyota Avalon if you have 2 kids or less.

I got rid of my Accord for an SUV. I doubt I'll ever go back to a car again - I just love the spacious and comfortable ride of my big hoopty!

Hondas are good cars. My bro-in-law is in the car business and buys nothing else.

I have manual Honda Accord.

You are talking about 2 different things a family car but you drove a van. However the Volkswagon Routan is new (not always good to buy the first year out of the box)

Honda Odyssey is #1 in the mini-van catagory that being said the Hyundai Enterouge (?) will give you more goodies and still maintain an awesome safety rating (fully loaded Hyundai vs low-mid end Honda)
In the Car Catagory Honda Accord 4-door will accomodate up to 3 full size adults in the back (kids should be no problem)

What price range are you looking for?? That would be the big decider Chevy I believe is still offering employee discounts but going used could get you more for your $$$$

Not with 3 carseats. It has the same space as my Avalon and it is way too tight.

My friend has a Honda Odyssey. It has some nice interior space. I like the deep part of the back to load groceries/or stroller/ extra luggage for a trip.
seh can fold down the back seat into the floor- nice feature! She can fit her little one's mini 4 wheeler in it for the trails by the Char. Hall Library!

I'm hauling 3 in carseats in my caravan. There are times I wish I had a little bit more seating for extra car seats likethe times I get together with my friends who have more than one child in a seat.

We have a 2001 Chevy Venture. Extended wheelbase. Battery is a PAIN IN THE AZZ to change (did it for the 2nd time this past weekend). I have no complaints about the van other than that. We've put 85K miles on it since we bought it in 2003. Decent power, lots of space. Would buy one again.

Power with Control
Our family of four is quite happy in the Charger. The occasional extra person isnt too tight a squeeze either, lots of room back there. 16 cubic foot trunk hold tons of stuff. For a bigger trunk, the 300C is the ticket.

Mileage varies with power, of course, the V6 gets about the same mpg as the Routan, the Hemi a little less. Both vehicles are made in Canada, oddly enough:)The Routan in Windsor, the Charger in Brampton.
