I'm going to have to take the course with him. Shooting a gun is on my bucket list.

Actually the giant mentioned a beginner's training course that was going to be in the area in a convo a few nights back. I'll ping him and see if I can get you some more details.

I would start with a BB gun. Its a great way to learn basic gun saftey and aim, it can be shot a lot more places than a 22 or a shotgun, and its not a toy. When i was growing up that was everybody's first gun.
Obviously a gun saftey course would be a good idea in any case.

I was just informed that the bf's coon hunters club has one next month. So, that's where we'll be going. I swear that when I passed the sign for the Coon Hunters Club (just past King Kennedy) I thought it was a racist joke. :dork:

He has a pellet gun now. My stepdad has talked about getting him a BB gun which he may do for him to use for the next month. He wants a real gun to hunt.

I didn't get a BB gun until relatively recently, like the last few years. I can't believe what fun I was missing out on as a child. :lmao:

Use it to ward off those rabid dogs that are running around in your area.

I also shoot at the crows, groundhogs, possums, raccoons and every other critter that I don't want to kill but want to get away. But those dogs would get a real bullet. However, I haven't seen them at all, TG.

I've heard people around the area say that they've seen them. My friend says that they killed her grandpa's dog. I haven't seen them.

For firearms deer hunting in Maryland, you are limited to shotguns shooting slugs and 20ga is the smallest caliber. So, maybe go for a single-shot 20ga shotgun. Also, keep in mind that there really aren't too many days for hunting with a shotgun. There are only 15 days this season. There are a few more days for muzzleloader. The rest of the season is for bow.

It's a women-only handgun course taught by Nick Cromwell:

if it is for hunting around here i would say a single shot 20 ga.

But he is going to need hunter education class before he hunts.

Stop by Dick's and see what they have in a 20ga youth model shotgun.

Some things to know...most shotguns will have a smooth bore barrel. Some will have a rifled barrel. While a rifled barrel will have better accuracy with slugs, they should ONLY be used with slugs (unless you want to ruin the barrel). A smooth barrel will be less accurate, but more versatile.
