If you can share stories, knowledge or photos about Flat Tops/Lexington Manor because you lived or worked there during the 1940’s, 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s, 1980’s, 1990’s and 2000’s plan to attend this information gathering event and reunion.
Did you ever take a dare again?Toxick said:I remember one time in '90 or '91, I spent the night with this one girl on a dare. Turns out she lived in the flat tops - but this was a double-dog dare, so I butched up and packed my jammies, paper-bag and 2-ply jimmy-hat, and made a night out of it.
I woke up at 3ish to take a leak - and use my pro-kit - and as I walked to the bathroom with the door falling off, I felt/heard something in my ear. When I got into the room, I looked into the mirror and shook my head. This texas-size cockroach slipped out of my ear canal and into the cracked sink and *shoop* down the drain it went.
I left.
Good times... good times.
I probably won't be at the reunion though.
My sisters attended Frank Knox elementary school prior to the Navy taking it over. That was a very long time ago, because they are really old. Anybody remember the quanset hut Navy housing that was across Route 235 from the Flat Tops? I do.Angel said:I have to agree with Chasey and maxima87 on this. I never lived in the Flat Tops, but I've heard a few stories from folks who lived there back in the day, and it seems that the neighborhood wasn't always as bad as it ended up becoming. I also learned that the Frank Knox building used to be a School back in the day and that's where the folks from Flat Tops used to attend school. I'd be interested in learning more about the history of the area.
I'm unfamiliar with the area you call "Chisley Town", but have heard reference to an area south of LexPk, and an area where Pax now is that was called "Jarboesville".Angel said:There used to be Houses in that field? I'd love to see some Ariel photos of the area as it was. One of my friends told me about her family farm that used to be on Pax prior to the Navy. I'd love to learn about the local history. I also learned that there was a town South of the base called Chisley Town. It seems that it must have been prior to the zoning of St. Inigoes maybe, but I couldn't find any info on it. I might not be looking hard enough. I just don't even know where to begin with research like that outside of google and if that doesn't return an answer, I usually just give up.
They do sell a book at St. Johns Pharmacy, it may or may not be the same book but may be helpful :shrug:BadGirl said:I'm unfamiliar with the area you call "Chisley Town", but have heard reference to an area south of LexPk, and an area where Pax now is that was called "Jarboesville".
If you want a great reference book of St. Mary's County history, I'd recommend you find a copy of this. I can't find my own copy, so will have to replace it soon.
History of St. Mary's County, Maryland 1634-1990, Regina Combs Hammett, Third printing 2000, St. Mary's County Historical Society, PO Box 212, Leonardtown, Maryland. NOTE: Highly recommended.

Special remarks are planned for 4 p.m. to commemorate the occasion and recall the neighborhood’s cultural heritage. With the involvement of Maryland Historic Trust and a team of folklorists, St. Mary’s County hopes to identify and document numerous aspects of life in the Flat Tops for deposit with the Maryland Historical Trust Library, Lexington Park Library, and the Patuxent Naval Air Museum. The county would like all former residents to bring photographs from the Flat Tops/Lexington Manor to be copied for possible inclusion in the project. All former residents and those who worked there are invited to attend.

I avoid most of the people from the old neighborhood nowadays, but still, I did have a few good parties and there's something to be said for being around a bunch of people who don't have so much money that they think they're too good for anyone else.
Alot of really poor people are good people and if nothing else, they know how to have a good time better than than rich people because they make due with what they have.
