Flat Tops Historical Reunion

As most of you know, I am not a local.

On my first visit to SoMD (3 years ago) I was headed to PLO. I passed the Flat Tops, and felt like I was driving through the Philadelphia suburbs (for some reason, they have numerous apartment complexes that have been abandoned)

I felt the same way as I felt when I passed those abandoned neighborhoods:

There is history there and stories to tell.

The Flat Tops have been there since the 40's? Think of how many people have lived, loved and even died there.

You don't have to tell me, I made my first pack of kool-aid in over 2yrs last week. Damn car gas is killing my Visa. But, I knew I was back when I took the first sip. :lmao: I haven't forgotten where I came from, but I was a snob then according to some. Can you believe that?
I played spades a little when I was 10 and my grandpa was still living but after that NO ONE ever ANYWHERE has EVER given me a chance to try to play cards with them. I think a card game is just as serious as bingo but with a higher potential for violence due to the drinking that a lot of times goes with playing.
One day I will host a card game and no one better not tell me I can't play.

I was never called a snob, but I'm not telling you what anyone actually called me:lol: It's a bit off color:ohwell:

AS for the card games. THere ain't NOTHIN' more serious than spades or dominoes!!! A "re-neg" is split wig offense!! :lmao:
I don't know anyone who even knows how to play spades anymore:frown: Same goes for boo-ray and tonk.. It's been so long I doubt I still remmber just how to play.

I also learned how to play spades in the flat tops and I love dominoes. :howdy:

I'm unfamiliar with the area you call "Chisley Town", but have heard reference to an area south of LexPk, and an area where Pax now is that was called "Jarboesville".

If you want a great reference book of St. Mary's County history, I'd recommend you find a copy of this. I can't find my own copy, so will have to replace it soon.
History of St. Mary's County, Maryland 1634-1990, Regina Combs Hammett, Third printing 2000, St. Mary's County Historical Society, PO Box 212, Leonardtown, Maryland. NOTE: Highly recommended.
St. Mary's library.:yay:

:yeahthat:
It wasn't always a run down cesspool.
Even after it was, I was never afraid to live there, because this town was still so small that I knew everyone. It was a small neighborhood and not much happened that everyone didn't know about.

One of the wierd things abou that place was the electrical wiring. There was a rush to get them finished so that Navy personel could move in. The electricians showed up so late that the drywall hangers put the walls up without the wiring inside. So, they poked holes in the tops of all the walls and ran the wiring in and out of them:confused:

The 'hood had the prettiest chery trees too. I wished I had tried to get one before they tore them all out.:frown:

I always say there is something special about those of us born in 1975 so "snobs in the hood" we were. :huggy:

You forgot how to play? :yikes: Well, that just means I can play with you until you get better again. :lmao:

What is boo-ray? :eyebrow:

Well at least you saw them your first time driving by. I must've driven a dozen times down that way before I noticed them and only then because I looked for them due to the thread about them being closed down. I just KNOW I miss out on seeing a lot of stuff. :jameo:

My dad said those cherry blossom trees were leftover plantings from DC. I still see them I don't think they are being torn out.

I"m down..... I used to be a vicious spades player.. It was hard to figure out my game because I didn't play like everyone else.. I was totally random:lol:

Booray is an old game that is like a cross between poker and spades... My gramma taught me to play and I used to make bank, even if we used quarters..

Just because some ppl live in the worse of conditions doesnt make them bad ppl.. I sure hope you're never down and out and have to live like that. You shouldnt laugh at other people.. :nono: Karma is a biatch....
Never did I say that they were bad people. I've been down and out before but always managed to work so I did not have to live in those conditions and I've been on my own since I was 17.

When I was 10 we moved from St Mary's City into the Flattops and lived there for 6 years. Was about 1968 or '69. The rent was $80.00 a month for a three bedrm. I loved it. There were other kids to play with, I could walk to the movies, drug store, library, and school.

I would go down to the office about every other month for paint and re-paint my bedroom - they gave you the paint for free. :lmao: My mother use to cuss the windows all the time cause it cost so much to make curtains for them. They must of been 7 or 8 feet long. But they were close to the floor which made them easy to crawl in and out of when I got older

We moved out after the apartment had been broken into for the second time :frown: I have great memories and lots of friends that I still know from living there.

Any neighborhood that is not taken care of falls apart...look at Harlem in the early 1900's and then again in the 1960's

It's not where you're from but who you are

My sisters attended Frank Knox elementary school prior to the Navy taking it over. That was a very long time ago, because they are really old. Anybody remember the quanset hut Navy housing that was across Route 235 from the Flat Tops? I do.

I do, it was inside the fence on base.
