The Flu Vaccine used to be made with modified Live Virus, now it's not. I get veccinated as soon as it is available, usually in August. The very young, the very old, and people with compramized Immune Systems are the targets of the deadliest of Flus. People that smoke should get the shot. The strains that the shots are made of, are the one's as determined by the CDC to be the deadliest. There are thousands of viruses out there, but only three are in the shot. We had three members of the same Family that died last year of the Flu. I only use hand sanitizer after using a shopping cart, but that's mainly because you don't know who washes their hands after going to the Bath Room. My rule of thumb is hand washing frequently, and not touching my eyes, nose or mouth unless the hands are washed. Some viruses can be caught through the air, but most are from touching surfaces where an ill person has touched. I'd love to take a swab of a shopping cart, and see what kinds of bacteria grows in those dishes.

We got to randomly swab anything we wanted, grow it and stain it, in my microbiology class (super neat class, btw), I swabbed my throat, my purse, the soda machine in the hallway, my hands, all kinds of stuff.

There are some things that should never be known

Take a swab of any given fountain soda cup while you're at it. I'll bet the kid who fills up the cups, straws and lids has all kinds of crud on his hands and under his nails. Then you grab the straw, tear off the wrapper, and proceed to drink out of it, transferring whatever he got on the straw wrapper to the straw. Basically putting whatever he has on his hands in your mouth. You might as well lick his fingers at that point or just cut out the middle man and lick his butt or nostril directly.

I've never got the flu shot, haven't been to the doctors in years, and have yet to get anything more than a cold once a year.

BTW, it is a misconception to think that only those with with pre-existing compromised health conditions are at risk of severe complications or death from the flu. I have a SIL that was in good health until she caught the flu and the virus attacked her heart.

New research presented last week shows that healthy children, as well as those with underlying health conditions, are at risk of dying from flu-associated causes.

The research was presented at IDWeek 2012, the first conference held by a consortium of infectious disease groups. It examined deaths among children over the past eight flu seasons.

Between 2004 and 2012, 829 U.S. children under 18 died from influenza-associated causes. While many of the deaths occurred among children with underlying health conditions, including neurological disorders, asthma or lung disease, and genetic or chromosomal disorders, 40% occurred among children with no known medical condition, according to lead author Dr. Karen K. Wong of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Healthy children actually died more quickly, according to the research, with a median of four days from symptoms to death. That's compared to a median of seven days from symptoms to death among children with a pre-existing condition.
