Food Allergies

He hates yogurt and will not eat it...:lmao:
Mixed it in with turkey and it's all gone....

Plain yogurt is blah tasting- I have eaten plenty of it. Mixing it with food makes it more palatable; for me fruit. I have been told you can also feed yogurt w/vanilla flavoring or blueberries however I would stick to plain and add whatever he will eat.

bruno likes plain she likes greek yogurt (its plain no flavorinings whatsoever) and she likes vanilla yogurt too. she only really wants the yogurt when I am eating it other than that she pays 0 mind to it if i mix it in with her dog food. But it has cured her gas problem she hasn't been farting lately and her stools are becoming more firm (shes has had diareah from her new dog food (yes i mixed it with the old food but she still ended up with it). I feed her nutro natural choice lamb meal & rice formula for large breed dogs. I was given a hard time by the vet for not feeding her largebreed dogfood so i switched her to it. she will not eat her food unless i mix with it some ground turkey then she will eat some of it but not all.

Would THIS face lie?
Yeah, I kind of messed up on my post.....We give him ground turkey and rice but we mix it with his dry food too....he eats it all and loves it...we have been mixing the yogurt in with it and he doesn't seem to mind...We also leave a bowl of just dry food out during the day if he wants a snack...He hardly touches it...Lay that ground turkey, rice and dry food down about 5PM and he woofs it all down....

My vet thought my Shepherd mix also had food allergies because she had red and pink ears and belly and constantly scratched. We tried different diets and was also told that Corn and Wheat are common allergens. My dog would start out liking a brand of dog food, then she wouldn't want to touch it. Finally I tried Purina Pro Plan (dry) Dog Food for Sensitive Skin and Stomach (Salmon based) and she loves it.

All this started last fall (at the age of 1 1/2) when my dog had a yeast infection in her ear. The problem came this winter when my dog's allergies didn't get better. The vet tried pills and shots and nothing seemed to help. Finally I shelled out the $200 to get the allergy testing done and come to find out she is allergic to almost everything (pollen, trees, grasses, dust, dust mites, mushrooms, etc.) I'm working on saving up money now because she will have to be on Atopica which for the first month alone will cost around $200 and will decrease as the dosage drops.

Not saying this is what your dog has, but if it doesn't get better than you may want to get the allergy test done. The only problem with the test is that they can not test to see if your dog is allergic to different foods, that's just a trial and error game. Best of luck!

Wow what an ordeal ! The vet mentioned that some breeds just have recurring ear inflammation, and this boy may be one of those.

So it sounds like the ear inflammation and the skin allergy could be from differing triggers for a dog? Of course I have no clue at this point and I am trying food first as the vet said his foot licking, face rubbing, etc. all point to allergies and the groomer said his odor pointed to a FOOD allergy. So that's why I am doing food first as opposed to allergy tests.

I'm checking to see where you may be able to get the RX for less. What mg do you need and how many per day or per month? I'm really hoping the food change will be all he needs - we'll see.

My dog also licks her paws constantly and rubs and scratches her face like yours. She scratched her mouth to the point it got a staph infection once. I clean her ears out once a week because it constantly needs it. She also has an odor to her paws and they sometimes stink so bad it gives me a headache. She weighs 60lbs right now, I'm kind of thinking that may be some winter weight gain or the fact that she finally likes her food :)

Have you tried a grain free food? I sure would go a more holistic route before I gave my dog any meds that has the list of side effects that Atopica has.

I believe that allergies stem from immune systems issues and if you get the root of the immune system problems, you will stop getting the positive results on allergy tests.

I forgot to tell you. The vet started me out with checking the food allergies too. The reason I thought it wasn't just that is because when winter came her scratching and rubbing became a little less, then once the snow melted everything got worse. For treats I get the Hill's Prescription Diet Hypoallergenic Dog Treats that was reccommended by my vet, but you need a prescription for it.

Interestingly his inflamed skin became worse when I added in that Rachael Ray food to his Lamb food - so I'm not sure if it's the Rachael Ray food that made him worse? Or if allergens in the air have done it - my own allergy symptoms have worsoned this past week or two. So he could be reacting to either .....

Well mine doesn't like to be still for ear cleaning but I need to make him do it and I was thinking to maybe try the white vinegar that someone else mentioned.

No I haven't, basically after the allergy testing was done the vet said the only way to treat this is by either Atopica or steroid shots. The shots have the worst side effects and I would not put her through that. The Allergy shots they told me is not a possibility because she is allergic to way too many things. I tried the Benadryl, and that didn't help at all, just made her drowsy :(

The vinegar with water in the ears may help. I told my vet I tried putting my dogs paws in vinegar to kill whatever the smell/bacteria was and she told me it was a good thought, but it wouldn't work.

I requested a sample of the RR food and thought it had crappy ingredients. I wouldn't feed it to my dogs, for sure!
Go grain free and try probiotics.
One thing to keep in mind is that there are a lot of environmental allergies right now with the trees starting to bloom. Many people have told me that their sinuses and allergies are going crazy. Mine certainly are~ love my neti pot! My one dog, Sophie, usually gets a little itchy when I am suffering from my allergies. Achoo!

I hope his paws didn't have any tiny cuts~ I would guess that would hurt!
This may sound stupid but I had a friend that had terribly horrible, nasty stinky feet (I mean BAD!) and he soaked his feet in a mixture of water and tea bags and it took away the stink! Something about the tannins in the tea. Wonder if that may help?! Just an idea

You'd be surprised at the vets that do not want to find out the "causes" of the things and most vets don't have a clue about good nutrition for dogs (and cats).

Your dog can test positive for allergens IF her immune system is whacked out because of poor food, antibiotics, steriods, etc. Vaccinations can also turn a dog's immune system upside down. It will appear as if she is allergic to things when in reality she is not.

Don't get me wrong, I love and trust my vet but she works with me and we talk about the various treatments.

Allergy medications would be my LAST resort after I tried GOOD food, probiotics and other supplements...fish or salmon oil being one of them.

We now carry salmon oil that contains probiotics that you use on top of thier food.
So many people are concerned because their dogs and cats appear to have dry skin. Salmon oil, probiotics, good quality foods containing the Omega 3's, less bathing and more brushing works wonders!

yup i love salmon oil. I put it on brunos food and she isn't even as itchy as she was. I also buy food that has salmon oil in it already too.

I have done the salmon oil in the past and that didn't seem to help. What vet do you go to? Do you have any food recommendations? Thank you for all the info you have shared :)

That's why I was told to try Chlortabs instead of Benadryl as they don't make them drowsy (generic sold at Walmart for $3 for 100 tabs) and I have been using that a couple days now.
