Food Allergies

My Sweetest Boy
I have done the salmon oil in the past and that didn't seem to help. What vet do you go to? Do you have any food recommendations? Thank you for all the info you have shared :)

I use Dr. Darnell. She is a mobile vet now, but she was with Prince Frederick Animal Hospital in the past.

Salmon oil alone, isn't going to do it. You have to reverse the immune system problems and then start all over. I use EVO for my Boxers. Do you know if your dog has a food allergy? Grains are generally the culprit but some dogs have a problem with certain proteins..beef..chicken, etc. Sometimes you have to experiment a bit. I'd give your dog a month or so on a grain-free food, a good probiotic and the fish or salmon oil supplement and see what happens. If you're bathing her, stop that as well. Don't give her any antibiotics or steroids during this time. If she has itchy or hot spots, try some Gold Bond Medicated power to dry up the area.

I AGREE with you totally on the vaccinations and immune system points. Unfortunately the current vaccination schedule that is recommended is generally over-kill for most of our furry friends.

You'd be surprised at the vets that do not want to find out the "causes" of the things and most vets don't have a clue about good nutrition for dogs (and cats).

Your dog can test positive for allergens IF her immune system is whacked out because of poor food, antibiotics, steriods, etc. Vaccinations can also turn a dog's immune system upside down. It will appear as if she is allergic to things when in reality she is not.

Don't get me wrong, I love and trust my vet but she works with me and we talk about the various treatments.

Allergy medications would be my LAST resort after I tried GOOD food, probiotics and other supplements...fish or salmon oil being one of them.

I don't know if she really does have food allergies. She is my first dog and she was a shelter dog. When I got her she didn't show any signs, but after about 6 months it started showing (she was then 2). I tried 3 different foods and she has been eating the purina sensitive skin and stomach (salmon) and I don't see her having any problems with it. Like I mentioned before with the other 2 foods she liked it at first then she gradually didn't want to eat it anymore. When I gave her Pedigree Beef (the wet food) she started scratching her face and it felt hot to me, I can't be 100% sure if it was the food or not. She is on the hypoallergenic treats.

Right now she is not on any meds and her vaccinations were Feb 13. I just bathed her March 3rd. I tried bathing her often and this last time I waited a month and a half. Everything I try hasn't improved her itching and scratching. Maybe it is the food and I just have to keep trying that like you mentioned.

Thank You so much! Maybe today i'll return the bag I bought Sunday and get the EVO. Do you know if Petsmart or Petco carries that?

No, they don't...well I know Petco doesn't. Peppers does...Solomons Island. Petco does carry Wellness Core which is a decent food and grain free. Petco does tend to be fairly expensive. Where are you located?

EVO is not cheap. There is also another decent grain-free food, Taste of the Wild.

I live in Waldorf. The food I buy right now is 35.50 at Petco for a medium bag. Do I need a prescription for these? It's hard to get my vet to give me a prescription to take elsewhere. They want me to drive to Callaway to get treats when I run out, even though they are pretty cheap.

No prescription needed. And you can buy grain free treats as well..or just use something of good quality...California Natural, etc.

So how's it going?

I was told to try putting Probios in my boys food 2 X a week for 4 weeks then 1 X per week for a couple months to see how he does.

After talking with the two of you that day, I went and got her evo, the dry fish one and got her some Evo snacks too. She ate her food like crazy at first, now I notice she is not eating it as much and her 2 1/3 cups is lasting her 2 days. Her scratching has gotten a little better, but she is still doing it. I caught her eating grass, which the test said she is allergic to, so I'm wondering if that's the reason she is still scratching. Other than that she took my bread off the counter and ate that, but I took it away from her once I found out she did it. The owner at Holistic Pet Warehouse in Waldorf told me that if her allergies didn't get better since it is summer, that he has some stuff I can try for that.

I'm looking Probios up now.

A friend of mine said that a typical dog dose of Probios is much cheaper when you use the Bovine (cow) version which is supposed to be the exact same as the horse/dog version. I looked it up on Jeffers Livestock:

Probios® Bovine One Oral Gel, 300 gm tube PN-P2 $16.95
Probios® Applicator Gun PN-P3 $14.95

I was told the typical dog dose is 5 to 15 grams, but not to exceed 15 grams. I was told to start off with 5 grams per dose.

So I am going to buy some from Jeffers as I can always use it on other critters too.
