He said the reason that the John Paul was assasinated was that he was going to shut down one of their main temples and get rid of masons in the Catholic hierarchy. Supposedly one of the Bishops was the assasin.

Are you sure? I thought that they descended from the Knights Templars and they were Catholics. Also to join the Freemasons you must believe in God or in a supreme being in most but not all lodges. There are Christian, Moslem, Buddhist, Jewish members of the masons.

Yes, but the Pope (politically motivated by the French king) put out a papal bull naming all the Templars heretics and excommunicating them. Their lands were confiscated and turned over to the Knights of St John and then all the arrested Templars were put to the inquisition. Scotland at the time was under interdiction because the Scottish king was excommunicated and so the papal bull was not recognized there. This became a safe haven for renegade templars (England too to some extent) and thus we see the foundation of Free Masonry there, specifically the Scottish Rite. There are a few hundred years of separation of the two to make it absolute fact that they are connected, but most historians agree that they are. There are various incidents from that time period that ties the two together, the most notable being the Peasants Revolt of 1381, which was highly organized, and specifically targeted Knights of St. John's chapter houses and holdings. The Masonic position of Tyler is believed to have come from the leader of the rebellion Wat Tyler.
