I thought the same thing when that happened to me. Dont worry about the price, the insurance actually paid for the repairs.
My made the pop sound, smoke came out of the dash then the lights and the radio didnt work, I think the door locks stopped also. I just drove it like that till I could get it fixed.

here is a picture of it right after I got back home that night.
