Critics mock liberal fact-checking site for rating reporting on Biden crack pipe funding 'mostly false'​

Snopes, a liberal fact-checking site, was mocked by critics this week for rating reporting on the Biden administration's alleged funding of crack pipe distribution to drug users as "mostly false," while also admitting that "safer smoking kits" were required to be distributed as part of a Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) grant.

In a Tuesday piece claiming news reports "grossly misrepresented" details about the substance abuse harm reduction program, Snopes stuck with its "mostly false" rating by arguing it was inaccurate to say that the distribution of the "smoking kits" was intended to "advance racial equity," but admitted that the pipes would be distributed with race as "a secondary consideration."








After being pilloried by critics, Snopes oddly updated its fact-check from "mostly false" to "outdated." It also updated the piece with an explanation to reflect the change.

"After a wave of grossly misleading news coverage in February 2022, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services stipulated that federal funding would not be used to include pipes in safe smoking kits, as part of a substance abuse harm reduction grant program. This newly-stipulated detail was not originally available, meaning the assertions made in a first wave of coverage had become outdated," it adjusted its original fact-checking piece to read.

The Drug Policy Alliance said the decision to 'remove pipes from safe smoking equipment is deeply disappointing.'

'This is a missed opportunity to be preventative of more deaths due to overdose,' the group wrote on Twitter. 'Giving clean drug-using equipment such as a pipe & syringe reduces transmission of disease including Hep. C & HIV.'

'Harm reduction works to meet people where they are at, and keep people free of diseases and alive so they have a chance of recovery and healing,' the group added.

IMO the police should arrest every person that overdoses and keep them in jail until they squeal on their supplier. The suppliers should be charged with attempted murder unless they squeal on their supplier.

There is big money in drugs, and too many politicians have a back door to that money.

Most safe smoking kits DO include crack pipes but Biden administration repeatedly denied taxpayer money would go to doling out the smoking paraphernalia: report​

• The Washington Free Beacon visited five harm reduction organizations and every single one included crack pipes in their safe smoking kits
• All of the centers were the types of groups eligible to apply for funding under the Biden administration's $30 million grant program
• It's not clear if any of these five organizations did apply for a grant
• The White House has adamantly denied that any federal tax dollars would go indirectly or directly toward funding crack pipes

'They were never a part of the kit,' said press secretary Jen Psaki of crack pipes. 'It was inaccurate reporting.'

'We've been very clear that we are not providing funding for crack pipes,' Psaki added in a later press briefing, calling the matter 'an issue that is not an issue.'

The affair began when a Health and Human Services (HHS) spokesperson reportedly told the Washington Free Beacon that included in these kits these kits could be pipes for users to smoke substances like crack cocaine and crystal methamphetamine, or 'any illicit substance.'

Days later HHS put out a statement contradicting its previously reported remarks. 'No federal funding will be used directly or through subsequent reimbursement of grantees to put pipes in safe smoking kits. The goal of harm reduction is to save lives.'
