Doctor’s brutal rape and murder leads to protests in India

Protesters demanded “justice for our didi [elder sister]” outside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata where the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee was found dead. The Independent spoke to doctors who unanimously agreed that the facility lacked safety measures for medical workers.

The demonstrations ensued last week after the resident doctor was found dead inside a seminar hall of the hospital on Friday. An autopsy later confirmed she had been sexually assaulted.

“She was very close to me – taught me most of the work I know today,” a student at the medical college, who did not want to be named, told The Independent. “I was working in the same department as an intern last year where she was found dead. This could happen to any of us in the future due to lack of security measures,” she said.

“We want the hospital authorities to take responsibility. What are they hiding?”

The local police arrested a civil volunteer associated with the Kolkata Police, Sanjay Roy, and remanded him to 14 days of custody. The suspect has been charged with rape and murder.

The protesting doctors in Kolkata and elsewhere have called for an unbiased investigation into the killing, the resignation of all responsible hospital authorities, adequate security for all medical staff, and speedy ratification of a healthcare protection law.

Consequences of Tickle v Giggle transgender judgement are dire, effectively cancelling women's only spaces in Australia

Anti-discrimination laws across Australia have been amended to protect a person’s gender identity alongside - or, as demonstrated by the Tickle v Giggle judgement – in place of, their biological sex.

As explained by Patrick Byrne in his book ‘Transgender: one shade of grey’ the objective of the Commonwealth Sex Discrimination Act 1984, when introduced, was to eliminate discrimination against women, for example in workplaces.

This discrimination arose because of their biological sex, not because of their dress, mannerisms or social characteristics.

Accordingly, the Act included biological definitions of “man” and “woman”.

Consequently, domestic violence support services, women’s only gyms and sessions in swimming pools were recognised by the courts as non-discriminatory under special measures intended to achieve equality.

In 2013, the Act was amended by removing the definitions of “man” and “woman” and giving protected status to “gender identity”, which is defined as: “the gender-related identity, appearance or mannerisms or other gender-related characteristics of a person (whether by way of medical intervention or not), with or without regard to the person’s designated sex at birth.”

The explanatory memorandum to the amending Bill stated that its intention was to ensure that transgender women were not excluded from accessing protections from discrimination on the basis of other attributes in the Sex Discrimination Amendment.

The Bill was introduced under the watch, and with the support, of then Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

Two U.S. Servicemembers on Shore Liberty today from the USS Wasp (LHD-1) in İzmir, Turkey were Assaulted and had Bags placed over their Heads by a Group of Turkish Youth Nationalists, who said it was “Payback” for an Incident which occurred between American and Turkish Soldiers in the Early 2000s. The U.S. Embassy in Turkey stated that the Servicemembers were released shortly afterward and are now Safe, with 15 Individuals who were involved with the Assault being Arrested by Turkish Police.

Similar Incidents to this occurred against Three U.S. Sailors on Shore Liberty from the USS Ross in 2014, Sailors from the USS Mount Whitney in 2021, and against several U.S. Soldiers and Airmen near Incirlik Air Base in 2012; with Turkish Nationalists using an Incident known as the “Hood Event” as their reasoning, where during the U.S. Invasion of Iraq in 2003, a Group of Turkish Soldiers were Captured and had Bags placed over their Heads before being led away for Interrogation, causing Anger among many Turkish Nationalist Groups.
