Google rolls out ‘pay calculator’ explaining work-from-home salary cuts

Screenshots obtained by Reuters show that Google employees who previously commuted an hour to Google’s Manhattan offices from nearby Stamford, Conn., for example, would see their salaries slashed by 15 percent if they choose to continue working from home.

By contrast, “Googlers” who live within NYC’s five boroughs and choose to work from home permanently would not see their pay slashed at all.

The screenshots also showed 5 percent and 10 percent differences for commuters living in the Seattle, Boston and San Francisco areas.

I certainly hope this doesn't become a trend, I'm enjoying saving my 90 miles of commute daily..Will probably see it affect merit increases, tho.

Feds will need to be aware that if the gov't allows continuous telework, and employees choose to relocate to other areas of the country, locality pay will kick in to whatever location Feds choose to move to. This will affect their bring home pay.
It's something that a lot of Feds may not think of.

I dont believe it is where you live but where your duty station is. That said they can be expected to come into the office and not get per diem for it.

Indeed ..... and the 3 hrs of my life back, not wasted in the car

I'm not sure about this change however, the Salary was ' negotiated ' at the time of hiring ...

Google will pay you X for Y work

Now that someone has moved and lives in a different you want to cut their pay .... People MOVE all the time ....

I'm sure Google will get away with the pay cut, but is smells - the action is certainly immoral or unethical ... I doubt illegal

Your pay should NOT be based on your living conditions or circumstances ... franly that is NONE of my employers business

The federal government does not see it that way.
It has to do with the different locality pay.

I don't see this as all that scandalous. Large companies often have higher pay for working in a high cost of living area. If you're going full-time work from home, it follows you might lose some of that premium pay. It all depends on how employment contracts are structured or what internal company policies are. The Google employees choosing to remain in one of the 5 boroughs in NYC keep the premium pay.

What I don't get is that Stamford, CT can't be that much lower COL, what with all the hedge fund managers who live there and get helicoptered into lower Manhattan daily. And Stamford is part of the New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. Google is probably looking at demand for labor in Stamford who desire full-time remote positions to determine the price they are willing to put on labor for these positions.

I just want to point out a couple of things:

First off, Google is big on the "living wage" bandwagon, equity, social justice, blahblahblah, and now they want to cut employee wages for something fairly arbitrary.

Also they are a $300B corporation doing this, and a sub of a trillion $$$ corporation.

This is so typical of the Marxists it makes my teeth hurt. Certainly they can do as they please, I am simply pointing out their hypocrisy and moral inconsistency.

They started in 1990. Was a pretty good year for me because I got lumped into a very high COL area that I was more than 100 miles away from. Was around a 20% pay increase.

It's not arbitrary. If they CHOOSE to be permanent work from home, and they CHOOSE to move to a lower cost of living area, then google will adjust. If they move to a similar cost of living area (like NY/Hawaii) they don't get a reduction. This makes sense as work from home is a change in employment status. When they negotiated for salary they didn't negotiate for permanent work from home. Not only is this fair, it's honestly kind of nice of Google vs the alternative, which is to put your existing job back on the market as a work from home job and allow anyone in the country to apply. You are free to re-apply for your job, might even get picked given you likely have good qualifications, but a new salary will be negotiated based on the new talent pool which includes the entire US and not just silicon valley. Good luck trying to keep that $300-$350k salary when someone in the midwest would be happy to do it for $80k.

  1. Employment contracts are 100% voluntary, one is free to leave if they dislike the terms.
  2. The price of labor has nothing to do with how much a company or the parent company makes.

Let me reiterate:

All I'm looking for is for Google to practice what they preach. Should they choose to be hypocrites, I will criticize them accordingly.
