Well...she certainly
wasn't ready to make nice!
Yeah, that could cost you a few fans, but still. I'm betting the namecalling from those "Redneck hicks" preceeded that comment. I like the fact that she didn't resort to buttkissing political correctness just to preserve some album sales.
Since you put it that way, that's exactly what she did - at first. When the fan reaction which happened almost overnight occurred, they were shocked.
SAWYER: Are you ashamed that the President is from your state?
MAINES: No.. I'm not truly embarrassed that you know President Bush is from my state, that's not really what I care about. It was the wrong wording with genuine emotion and questions and concern behind it…
Later...
"
I think it came down to, it was ... that it was in a foreign country and it was that it was an off-the-cuff statement…And I think the way I said it was disrespectful. The wording I used, the way I said it, that was disrespectful… "
"The people who are on our side think I was pressured. They would like to believe that I was made to apologize… They liked me until I apologized. (Laughs) And then the people who didn't like me thought that it was written by someone else and couldn't give me credit for my own apology, and neither of those are true…"
And
"As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect. We are currently in Europe and witnessing a huge anti-American sentiment as a result of the perceived rush to war. While war may remain a viable option, as a mother, I just want to see every possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers' lives are lost. I love my country. I am a proud American."
So yeah - she was - kind of ready - to make nice.
Then she got nasty. And that's when fans were disgusted.
