Got to make up for the lost revenue from all those damned smokers buying over there in Virginny! They doubled the toll about 8 years ago too. One thing for certain, they aren't spending the toll money on bridge improvement or replacement!

Well you know why, don't you? Maryland wants to hold us captive. The powers are getting tired of us going to VA for cigarettes, groceries, gas, etc. They would like us to leave our tax dollars right here, thank you. If they could figure out a way to build a wall around the state and never let anyone leave for any reason, believe me, they'd do it.

In two years the toll will be more than double. THAT is some messed up ####.

Its only been posted on every news site for the last few months....it was well known.

My commute to my parents in NC...its now 4 times what it was 1Jan2011. Every toll road I take has at least doubled if not quadrupled in the last 4 months.

Did it double? I thought it used to be $1.50 each way and now it's $3.00 one way. $5.00 is crazy and $8.00 is just ridiculous. It's a freakin' 2 lane bridge!

And speaking of tolls - OBX vacationers beware! The toll on the Chesapeake Expressway has been raised to $6.00 on peak weekends (Memorial Day to Labor Day). Pretty stupid, considering a lot of people will just take 168 business and screw things up for the locals.

And it's just not the Nice bridge. They are proposing the same sort of insane increase for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge:

Commuters1 E-ZPass Maryland1 Cash/Base2 Video3
Current Toll Rate $1.00 $2.50 $2.50 $5.50
Effective 10/1/2011 $1.50 $4.50 $5.00 $6.25
Effective 7/1/2013 $2.80 $7.20 $8.00 $10.00

Want to use the tunnel in Baltimore?

Commuters1 E-ZPass Maryland1 Cash/Base2 Video3
Current Toll Rate $0.40 $2.00 $2.00 $5.00
Effective 10/1/2011 $0.90 $2.70 $3.00 $3.75
Effective 7/1/2013 $1.40 $3.60 $4.00 $5.00

$8.00 to drive your car across a bridge? $4.00 to use a tunnel? Absolute lunacy.

I went over that bridge a couple of weeks ago in a truck and it was $15....if this increase goes through, the amount will almost double on Jan. 1 and then go up another $13 in a year and a half to $36(for E-Z pass holders)....for those that don't cross that bridge on a regular basis, they might as well just drop their drawers and put a sign on the front of their truck that says "I can't afford lube, so at least spit on it before inserting".

Don't watch the news; haven't seen it on Rush, Michelle, Ann, or Fox news.

Holding out for True Blood's season 4 on HBO.

FYI that 168 business was a parking lot two weekends ago. you couldnt even make the turn. My parents live in Kitty Hawk so I know about that one very well. Its a mess.

I hope it makes enough drool as it will hurt otherwise

It amazes me that these people that are increasing the rates like this one would not have a single thing if it wasn't for a truck

I posted a thread about this a couple weeks ago. My main complaint was the commuters getting a break on the tolls.

sooner or later the trucking companies and independents will just avoid Maryland. Between the tolls and the talk of an additional fuel tax, its just not going to be worth it to them to travel here.

Its ok with me, Im not that far from the Virginia border to do my shopping.

There are ways around the tolls and the fuel tax....however, if the company/IC doesn't purchase a certain percentage of their fuel in every state that they drive(and yea, they have to keep a record), there is a fee that the state charges....which is about what the tax would cost them

Gets the truck drivers/trucking companies either way they go

Then it would be to their advantage to just not deliver to maryland anymore.

I would love to see that happen. Just wait till the gas pumps start running dry, (actually I think there may be contracts with the stations that might not allow this) but, other shipments could be stopped if the trucking companies decided that it was not to their advantage to drive in Maryland.
