Couple of questions before recommendations- :howdy:

Size of TV you are looking to purchase.

Brand preference

Flat Screen or Projection

I assume with your purchase of a HDTV meaning you will or have HDTV service from Comcast, DTV, DISH, Metrocast or FiOS?

I want a flat screen, prefer not plasma. big as I can get. HDTV mainly for the X-box 360.. Also going to have the laptop on the tv if possible but not a priority.

get the microsoft component cable for the x-box, will get you atleast 1080i, just remember you have to go in the main x-box menu to change the setting for it. I think it is default at 480i. Don't worry about the HDMI cord for it unless you have the newer version of 360 that is HDMI ready.

There are knock off brands but some people have compalined about them.

If you have a friend that gets Consumer Reports, they just did a big eval. Samsung came out on top in almost every size category. Lots of good info there, way too much to parrot here.

4d: Why not plasma?
Just curious because dad got a nice plasma and the only real downfall is that it makes the room warmer  (only flaw I noticed JUST because of the plasma selection, it isn't the greatest non-HD picture either, but that's because he was on a limited budget)

I have a Samsung 50" Flat Screen. I've had it for about 3 years. I believe it's a 1080 DLP. I love it.

Plasma not good for rooms that get light, in a darker room they are excellent though. Especially with the deals they offer now.

:yay: Gotcha.
I didn't really do the research since it's out of my short-term purchasing, but that sounds like what my dad mentioned. It definitely seems best at night, but not bad during the day either.

In My Opinion

thats the downside. and it has to do with the LCDs being backlit, so you never notice the light difference.
that being said, the upside to the plasma is how it makes the black vs the LCD, the LCD because of its being backlit has to block light to create black, the plasma just gives off no light in the black areas. Plasma gives a darker purer black than the LCD and this gives it a better picture in my opinion.

mine is LCD

I have a 42" Dynex (Best Buy store brand) plasma.

:neener: I won it from Shoppers Food Warehouse grand re-opening this past summer

You'll need an HD video source, a game console (PS3s are Blue Ray players), cable or Sat. A inexpensive alternative is an upconverting DVD player.
Turns out that a regular DVD player looks like crap on a large HDTV
You'll probably want at least one HDMI cable, get them online fom some place like Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!.
Make sure the TV has enough inputs and outputs to hook up your various componets like surrond sound

You're right. I got a deal at Best Buy last summer on a Sony BDP-350S Blu-Ray player for $325.00(originally $500.00) and movies like Wall-E and The Dark Knight - are flat awesome!
