I smoke cigarettes, have since I was 18 years old. I'm now over the age of 50. In all that time, I've never committed a crime to get my cigarettes. I've never robbed someone, broke into a house looking for cigarettes, wrote a prescription to obtain...well you get my point. I'm not saying all crime is drug related, but, without doing research, I would guess a very high percentage is drug related. Look at DC for goodness sake, its actually unusual to hear nothing about someone being shot and killed in DC every night. Gang and drug related I would venture to say. If they make it legal and the state oversees the selling and manufacturing, the taxes will be so high, the same ones who buy from dealer in the neighborhood, would still to continue to buy from that guy. What everyone is missing in this conversation, is, cigarettes are LEGAL. Drugs are not. Until a few years ago, you could smoke in your favorite restaurant, bar, store, etc. Hell, I can remember going to the doctors with my grandmother so she could get her checkup and guess what...the doctor smoked in his office. I was hospitalized after an auto accident back in the late 90's, I could smoke in the hospital at that time. I really think its a matter of choice. If you're an adult, you make the decision. If I own a business, pay my taxes, pay my employees, buy my inventory and pay my bills, I should have the right to offer a smoking establishment and let the public decide rather they would like to patronize my business or not.
