Sheesh. She's a 17 year old impressionable girl who has not really lived life. So, she joined the Navy. BFD. You really think she knows what to expect? I think not. I would suspect her mindset will change quite a bit once she's actually IN the Navy and has experienced life away from mommy. The teacher is acting like an ass.

I agree with you for the most part. I think the teacher is just concerned that saying and or writing things like that may get her in trouble with the Navy. IMHO, its a legit concern.

However, if he gave her a worse grade because he didn't agree with her opinion (as happens often), than I'd say he's a complete, narrow-minded ass.

^^^^ Right there is an excellent response back to the teacher Kain, well, minus the teacher's an ass part. Oh and might want to leave out the BFD part too.

The issue is whether or not A) as a member of the US Navy, it is appropriate that she should be writing such material, and B) it is appropriate for the teacher to make this his/her problem.
And the answers are "no" and "no".

I wouldn't even waste that much time on it. I would simply respond, "Thank you for your concern." End of story.

Actually if is she is on DEP, then she hasn't taken her final oath, therefore is not subject at this time to US Navy protocol. BTW, before I enlisted I was thought of as something akin to a tree hugging, protest marching, hippie loving peacenik. Don't worry about it. The teacher is totally out of line, and your daughter is in school to get an education and an idea of the world. Her experience and opinions of the world will evolve and change thru experiencing it. Her teacher's responsibility is only to ensure her education, nothing more. For him to assume otherwise and attempt to degrade your daughter and her opinions, shows him as a narrow minded busybody who should take great care to look for an alternative career.

His question is simply with her negative feels, why would she want to join the military, especially during a war she doesn’t feel we need to be fighting. Maybe this was not her intent Kain, but with the scattered thoughts, one could only come to that conclusion.
:yeahthat: Most definitely. Please inform your daughter that when she joins the military she is not joining a job. She's going to protect our country and that means taking orders to go aboard ship and fight in the Middle East. If she feels this war is wrong, she'd better not raise her hand and sign on the dotted line. She can't object to orders once she is in. This is war time and they don't want her opinions, they want her to obey orders. I really feel sorry for her if she's going in the Navy under a wrong impression. If she doesn 't want to go to the Middle East and fight they are not going to say, "Well, if you really don't want to go then I guess you don't have to." I've seen too many of them in my 20+ years that came in the service with the wrong impression, and they all had a very rude awakening.

 Not laughing at you, just the situation: I find that last part ironic.

Anyway, you bring up a few good points. In short: You're correct, the wisest thing he/she could have done would've been to keep their mouth shut. I only looked at what he said: I didn't take into consideration whether or not it was his place to say it. :yay:

HOLY SHIAT! I am almost totally speechless! I just received an e-mail from one of my daughters teachers. He's upset about an essay she turned in about United States Policy in the Middle East. I thought, all teachers were fricking Liberal! I don't even know what to do. I don't see what she wrote as anti-war at all! Am I wrong?

His E-Mail

Dear Mrs. xxxxxx

Once again, we are dealing with an issue regarding xxxxxx renegade spirit. She is a good student and will always be afforded the ability to express her opinions in class. I have a personal concern. It is my understanding, that she is formally a member of the United States Navy. I have a son in the Army and as you are well aware, the United States Military does not tolerate insubordination. If she is against the War, I suggest she find a more subjective career.

Sincerely,

xx xxxxxxxxxx

Her Thesis Statement which was attached

I have researched U.S. Policy in the Middle East. I am a Republican and love my country but somehow, Our Policy in the Middle East, seems shallow and poorly thought out. Basically, in a nut shell, America thinks that everyone should live just like we do. In a perfect world that would be nice but get real! Because of our position in Israel The Middle East hates us! Can a country who is despised and hated truly bring about permanent, positive change? I understand and agree that these people live in horrible conditions and are mistreated by their governments but that doesn’t change the facts. We can’t kill everybody, so we have a real problem on our hands! It was wonderful and uplifting to see the footage from the recent Iraqi elections, their cute purple fingers and big smiles but we have to face facts. Once America leaves the region and we eventually will, tyranny will once again rear it’s ugly head and the people will be right back at square one. If we want to make a powerful and lasting change in this region we must be willing to meet them halfway.
I see nothing wrong with the concept of her thesis statement, though readability and grammar could use some work. The fact that she finds fault with what we do and have done is admirable as I too share some of those feelings. It is immaterial that she has entered into the delayed entrance program for the Navy, she, as an American, is entitled to her view and opinion.

What I find disturbing is that the educator has reduced Mid East policy to simply the war. It is much more than that and an adult that has taken on the task of molding minds should be more aware of that or maybe they should practice what they preach and look for more subjective employment.
