I hope that every child who goes to school turns out OK but for ignorant people like Sockgirlwith2kidsfromdiffentXs and PinkyStinkyliberal to make the comments they have without really knowing what they are talking about is enough to make me cringe. They are clueless and...as you said...ignorant.

Coming from you, I'm sure socki takes that as a compliment. :killingme

You're just jealous that you failed in life and could never be as good as I am. When I walk into Wal-Mart tomorrow, please don't try to put one of those stupid stickers on me. I'll bring you a new pin for your blue vest. Will that make you feel better?

Can anyone out there tell me what i need to do Home Schooling at home for my child (6 years old )What curriculum is allowed, where to get the materials. The people at Student Services are no help at all!!!!!!!

Some peeps at student services are so non-home schooling, ignore them and do the research. Don't listen to peeps like Socki, even those with tons of education, doesn't mean they are familiar with homeschooling or are the best to provide it. I received lots of good advice from peeps on the forum....Good luck, my son is doing much better right now with the home schooling!:howdy:

I am with you Pinky!!!!

More importantly, the home schooled kids lose the interaction of other students (for better or worse). I remember growing up and having school projects in that we had to form teams and work together to accomplish the task - whether it was a report (research in the library as the Internet was not around), science project, etc.

And please don't tell me the kids interact after school. Getting a group of 2-3 to play Playstation is not the same.

Lame.

Not really. Maybe back in the old days when teachers could teach as well as discipline.

And for the record, my kid is in public school, public school is fine. I just think it is a bit myopic to believe that it is the end all be all of education. Home schooling works just as well, if not better. I have much respect for parents who choose to home school.

What my kid learns in public school is a joke, much of what is taught is revisionist history and the math and english classes are so dumbed down it is just embarrassing. She learns more outside of school than she does in. Anyone who puts complete control of their childs education in the hands of public schools is doing themselves and their child, a huge disservice.

There are all sorts of home school co-ops and groups to get involved with. These groups allow children to work together on projects, have P.E. together and go on all sorts of educational field trips.

I have found over the years that most people who don't home school don't realize all the opportunities out there for home schoolers to get together with other kids. And I think that is understandable because if you don't do something or don't have a need to know something you usually don't know a lot about it. For example, if your child is born with some handicap you are going to know a lot more about it over time than someone who has never had to deal with it. I have also come to realize that some people will never agree with home schooling no matter how much you talk to them about it. And that is fine. Its what make America great. We have the freedom to educate our childern in what matter we feel is best for them.

:smoochy:Personally I knew nada about homeschooling till certain peeps on this forum enlightened me!! Very good info, ignore the shiat!!

Sorry mominsmc - have to disagree again. Elementary schools are normally first through fifth grade (some have sixth grades while others put sixth graders in junior high). That means the kids are interacting daily with others that are differing ages. A 4 year difference means a lot to a 6 year old first grader.

By doing things outside the home, what do they do? I remember a field trip in 5th grade (over 30 years ago) where we went to a quarry to look for "gems." The most we found was some mica and garnets - but it was great to compare our finds with others in the class.

I also believe that by being home schooled, the student should not be allowed to take part in extra-curricular activities at the school - whether that be intramural sports, varsity teams or any clubs. If the child is not enrolled in the school, then that student should get no benefit the school has to offer.

Do you realize even home schooled kids parents pay the same tax to pay for public education and you think that they should be denied extra activities simply because the parent chooses to home school.....they pay the same as you and use less services!

I just think children need to learn to make their choices with out mom or dad around. They learn more freedom at school. Make close friends and learn how to deal with the people that may cause conflict. Parents don't get their alone time either. It is also important to have some down time. Have you actually given your children a choice or did you choose this for them?

Nuts, children need to know the boundaries. You are crazy to think that is taught in our public school system.

Children are not mature enough to make decisions like where they want to go to school

Children don't have to go to school to learn how to deal with conflict. They can do that with the neighbors kid, the kid at dance class that won't leave 'em alone, the kid in the theatre that won't shut up, etc. Some of you people act like school is the only place our kids will learn anything good, when in fact most of what they absorb at public and private schools is how to be cool, do drugs, get laid, instead of focusing on education.

I'm sure there are some poor excuses for "teachers" SAHM's, but the same can be said for schools. I'm sure there are some awesome schools, but the same can be said for some SAHM's that are educating their kids.

I honestly do not believe that "schools" are appropriate for children.

If I had it to do all over again, in this day and age, I would not send a child of mine to school.

SOUTHERN - please go back to post 49 on page 5. I will quote part of it here:

Let's not bring taxes into the discussion. I believe that if a couple have NO children and will NEVER use the school system, then they should not pay school tax. Currently, because I have a house in Pittsburgh, I pay a school tax there (as well as city, county, state, and property) - despite the fact my wife and I live here and we have no kids.

If I choose to not drink, I do not pay the tax on alcohol. If I choose to not smoke, I do not pay the tax on tobacco products. If I choose not to buy something, I do not pay the sales tax. So, why am I forced to pay school tax if I have no kids and will not use ANY services of the school?

You and I are in agreement on this on...

What I have learned here is no matter what people will be rude enough to call people names. All we were doing is stating our opinions. Never did we call you names for your opinions. I did state it reminds me of a cult. But I didnt call you all names.

I love public school. I need a break...lol! My son is only 3 1/2 and goes to school. He has a little speech issue but he is learning so much more then what i was teaching him. Just being around other kids he picked up more. Some bad things and good..lol! Over all public school is a great idea.

Failed in life? Andy has done pretty well for such a young guy. He has a great job and a great side job interviewing people that most of us will never get to meet.

And get your story straight about me. I have 3 kids. None of this has anything to do with this thread.

Homeschooling can be tough. Charlotte Hall library has a lot of resources and leonardtown library has some. I homeschooled my daughter for 8th grade and lucky for me I had some friends that could help me out (especially algebra). Board of ed should be able to give you a list of curriculum/companies that are state certified. I dealt with Jessica Malcolm at Board of Ed. Her number is 301-475-5511 Ext 152 (Pupil Services) Hope this was some help to you.

People please. Can we dispense with the insults and name-calling and discuss the topic???

I'm surprised anyone would take issue with homeschooling, considering some of the dolts the public school system turns out. It never occurred to me that anyone would have a problem with someone else homeschooling their kid.
