How many gears?

I get that but, what about an emergency? I want all the lean I can get. I'd rather wash the rear having run out of what the rubber can hold than get stood up by the pipe if it ever comes to that.

:buddies:
Been there and had to do that. It scraped, but held on to the road. If the bike had been higher off the road, I really couldn't have leaned anymore than I did. Wouldn't want a bike I couldn't put in a turn as much as I had to turn. Even so, if I want to ride, I've got to have a machine I can put my feet on the ground and use the way I need to use it.

Sport or adventure bike if you want to lean

Not a great pic, and it really doesn't look that impressive, but much lower and the lower saddle bags would have been dragging...

Nah, you get to know exactly how far you can go and it's just the very bottom aft tip of the pipe that hits not the whole pipe.

Friend of mine drags his pipes on his Ultra just about every turn....he's ground away quite a bit of them

He says if you are causing sparks to fly, you aren't doing it right :lmao:

Certainly won't claim big touring bikes are the equal because they are not but, I was shocked the first couple times I road FLHTCU's just how far, and readily, those beasts would get over. Same with my Strat. I actually need to change the crash bar because I hit it too often. It's the wrong shape, never mind what the manufacturing says and THAT is not a good feeling when it hits.

I belong on an adventure bike because I'll go pretty much anywhere, fire trails, gravel, dirt roads, crap roads, and have done so on the Strat. But, I like a big bike, the down in it feel, all the bags, trunk, V twin, etc.

More bikes is the obvious answer!

Try and catch a Ride Like a Pro demonstration. They do tighter turns on the big baggers then we do on 250's during the safety classes

Maybe I need to get a copy of that and watch it. I'd like to be able to drag a knee in a really tight turn at 80 on my '47 without drifting out too much.

Wow! That was tight! I'm so far away from being able to pull off stunts like that, it ain't even funny. :frown:

So far I've almost mastered the following skillz:

1. Starting the bike before everyone else in the group is a mile down the road already

2. Stopping.

3. Stopping without stalling.

4. Starting off without stalling. (related to 1, above)

5. Pulling in to and successfully parking in gravel lots without becoming the focus of much hilarity and bearer of road rash.

6. Knowing when 'tis better to just roll in to a gravel lot, stop, park wher it stops, and come back later when nobody is looking to re-position the scooter for a succesful launch back on to hard road surface again. (reference 1-5, above)

Baby steps...

They will probably be at the spring safety rally. They were impressive at the last one at the Hollywood VFD

You still have your Sporty?

Nope, had to sell it a year and a half ago to pay my mortgage :ohwell:

If I ever find a real job that makes more than the 2 I currently have, I will new(to me) one....I'm looking for a softtail deluxe/slim....that 1200 had way to much weight in the front for me (made it hard to drag the pipes )

Say what you will about the GW's reverse gear... it does keep you from looking the fool in situations like that. and if you do it right, no one really knows that's what you're doing... just looks like a really easy backwards push.

It took me exactly one #### up and I haven't pulled into a downhill parking spot since.
