How would you feel if...

Is it ok to quarter a deer in a parking lot of a grocery store?

  • Ew, thats disgusting, take your deer cleaning elsewhere. Its not my business if it spoils or not.

  • Sure. The meat is better tasting and better for you than the stuff sold in that store anyhow.

  • I don't really care either way, its not like I have to look at the deer if I don't want to.

In what way would "all hell have broken loose"? Its not illegal, there isn't much you can really do about it but say that you don't approve...

No its not illegal. Its disgusting, and very RUDE and disrespectful. Something a young child should NOT be seeing I am sure they would be very disturbed (I know I would) and your in a public place I am sure kids were around.

Actually the youngest person (barring one baby that was like, newborn and wouldn't remember a thing) was twenties minimum. I actually would have felt bad if there had been a toddler that had seen it, but I didn't think about that at the time (probably because I don't even remember seeing a single kid in the store...kinda weird i guess lol, but it was afternoon on a monday so what do you expect i guess). but i don't get how "all hell would have broken loose" lol?

Everything sounds legit... seems like it turned out alright. It was nice of the store manager to offer the area behind the store for you to finish up. MD-NRP was just doing their job.

However, as a hunter I have to say that it is up to us hunters to consider that there are many Non-hunters watching us. We really should do our best to keep our practices out of the public eye, so that we don't create any more Anti's. I'm all for showing kids where real meat actually comes from, but a grocery store parking lot, probably isn't the best place.

Just remember - as a hunter - what you do can effect the rights of other hunters.
It's not what I see that bothers me, it's who gets to clean up the mess? Did they bring a hose and a trash can to clean up with or are the leaving that up to the owners of the store? (in which case it probably won't get done for hours).

You started a poll and asked for opinions. If I saw you doing that I would have given you a piece of my mind, and it's rare that I do that. Illegal or not: It was gross and not showing any common sense. :buttkick:

Take your butchering out of a public parking lot. :wench:

P.S. I love venison.

I had a neighbor who gutted a deer in his driveway - and i live in townhouse complex. Didn't bother me, I wasn't going to eat it anyways. Did p/o the other neighbors, though. that was funny

There wasn't a mess made...

I guess i should clarify.

quartering is just the division of the deer (after its been skinned, but we kept the skin...we wouldn't leave a mess for the store.) into big pieces to be put in a cooler to keep cold until you can actually take the meat off.

The gutting is done right there in the field or whatever, thats why its referred to as "field dressing". that is when you take all the organs out.

Someone was cutting up a deer to put on ice in the parking lot of a grocery store?

I ask because my friend and I went up to Ocean city (well, we actually stayed just outside in Rehobeth, Delaware) to go Sika deer hunting on Assateague Island. He got one and he field dressed it, weighed it in, and then we headed up to Food Lion to get ice. It was going to be another 20 minute trip or so back to where we were staying and we didn't want the meat to spoil so we got the ice and he was working on quartering it up in the parking lot in order to get it in the coolers and on ice (it was darn hot on Monday...don't remember the temperature exactly though).

Apparently some customers had a problem with that and the manager walked over and asked us to take our business behind the building because we were turning customers away or something. We did as we were asked because that actually got us in the shade too. Then not five minutes later, DNR pulls up and checks to make sure everything was taken legally, which it was. All turns out fine there and my bud finishes up the deer and we head on our way.

I'm all for someone calling DNR about it because I hate seeing poachers anywhere and this was a situation where it was better to be safe than sorry and call DNR. I'm curious though, would anyone on here have a problem seeing a deer be cut up outside of a grocery store, or any store for that matter?
I woulda bought an extra bag of ice and a box of trashbags. Put the sika in the trashbag, put 1 bag of ice in the chest cavity and the other behind the back and then close the bag as best you can. That will keep it plenty cool until you can get back to where you were staying.

Congrats on the deer. Sika is some damn fine eating.

All hell would have broken loose if I had of been there is what I was saying... I am very opinionated and if I saw that happening I would have said what I thought...not like it would do anything but I would have felt better.

I can see where non-hunters would be offended by this, I agree with behind the building. I'm not surprised such a big deal was made about it.

The whole kids and bambi thing?......my daughter has no problem with eating deer and is fully aware of the whole hunting, processing, etc. because she's always been exposed to it.

Funny - we went to the mountains recently, where we stayed the deer were VERY tame and came right up to the decks to be fed apples. My daughter oos and aas over how pretty they are and in the next breath turns to her dad and says, "you should have brought your gun, we could have filled the freezer." -- Husband say's "that's my girl!"
Thought I would die laughing.

I can see where it may "freak" some people out (especially kids), but given the circumstances in your case (hot, middle of a week day, already field dressed, etc.) I probably wouldn't have gotten upset. May have thought EWW for a second though! It most definitely would have been better had you thought ahead of time about going around back or at least to an empty area of the parking lot just so it wasn't so obvious. It sounds like, from the way the store manager handled it, it probably wasn't the first time it had happened. If the store is located near hunting grounds, odds are others have done it before. Glad to hear that you only hunt for food purposes. Happy hunting!

Do you not eat meat? Any grocery store around here that I can think of has the butcher shop in plain view of anyone walking past the meat counter. Take a look next time you're at the store. What they were doing would not have looked any different than what is behind the glass windows (except that behind the glass it's probably 40 degrees)

No I am not a vegan. I eat meat I just choose not to see them butchering it. I have been in many grocery stores and have never seen the butcher shop in plain view...even if I did thats an appropriate place to be doing so. If you know thats there you can distract a childs attention but in a parking lot a kid is curious so they are looking around, and they will want to know what is that person doing to that deer? He asked for everyones thoughts on it so I am just giving mine. Kay? Thanks.

Why? This is a fact of life, I agree that they should have maybe been better prepared and little more discreet.

In all reality if parents wouldn't make such a big deal about it then the kids would just accept it as what it is, A FACT OF LIFE. You might not practice it and choose to buy your meats at the deli but the process is the same why would you shelter kids from it. Not drawing their attention to it I understand but if they see it explain it.

I am a human, not a vegan, and I think carving up animals is disgusting. In a parking lot, no less. Should have gone around the back of the grocery to begin with.

Of course it doesn't grow on trees  It grows in MEAT COUNTERS in nice little packages.

:yeahthat: Mercy! That's almost as bad as getting eggs from a chicken butt.

I would likely think it was gross, but wouldn't throw a hissy fit over it. If my son were to see, I'd take the opportunity to explain what they were doing and why. I doubt he'd bat an eyelash. Was the grocery store parking lot the best place to take care of business? Definitely not, but it's over and done with now.

All of us one time or another have to be reminded that just because our actions at the time seemed not out of the ordinary does not necessarily mean is justified in the eyes of others. Women breast feeding in public, wearing of certain clothing on Airlines are just a couple of common circumstances that can upset or offend. A little for thought (common sense) before taking the plunge will keep any negative attention at the minimum.

Maybe it's because my kids are growing up with a father that hunts, but both of my kids - from a VERY young age, are well aware of where meat REALLY comes from. They have seen the deer in the back of the pickup after being shot and field dressed. They have been in the stripping house (little building by the barn that was once used to strip tobacco for you non-farm types) when the deer was cut up and ground into burger. They have helped make the burger. And they eat the burger and LOVE deer burger. It's all in what you know, really. I mean, come on, less than 400 years ago, plenty of young kids helped deal with the meat that daddy brought home.
