Well, I don't, but then again, I live North. Maybe getting off on some back road somewhere, they might cut loose. Where I come from, I see rice rockets flying WELL OVER THE SPEED LIMIT, which is why I have no sympathy. People who drive like that shouldn't be allowed to have a license, no matter who it may be.

Yeah, all these country roads down here :ohwell:

I see them doing 60 and pulling wheelies on the beltway. Not looking forward to the day when I have to stop and help one of these idiots. Just hope my wife and kids don't see it when it happens.

95% of Harleys can't go like a bat out of hell

LOL Sadly , and I ride a Honda, it IS the sport bike crowd that does MOST of the reckless riding that I see...now and then there is a cruiser rider being stupid, but not as often to be sure. Sad part is, we ALL get the bad name from the actions of a few.....

I did too...on Indian Head Hwy several years ago. I couldn't believe my eyes!!! Going home from work, this one guy was doing wheelie on a stretch of straight road. I had no words!!!

Yes they can. It may be an older, slower, creaky bat out of hell but...

Even the hot-rodded police Harleys are slow.
If you're ever beside on when he cracks open the throttle, you'll notice a much larger increase in noise then any sudden burst of acceleration

Does it really matter?
Nobody ever said if it was one of those rice rockets or not. If it was, I have no sympathy. Those clowns fly like a bat out of hell, weave in and out of traffic, go up the middle of the road in traffic and don't give a damn and let loose at 100 mph. I was coming home from VA last weekend and a whole bunch of them were traveling North on 301, flying up the road. As I came into Laplata and traffic started to build up at the Rt 6 light, they started going up the center between the lanes. Thank god an undercover cop was there and pulled a whole bunch of them over. There were about 5 or 6 on the side of road in LaPlata looking all sad..sorry about their luck! I would have thrown the damn book at them! It's really hard to feel sympathetic when they do stupid crap like that.

Are you stupid or something?....

1.) Its not fair to all crotch rocket drivers for you to generalize like that

2.) That man could have DIED (I havnt heard if he pulled thru or not). If he made it, however, he was in bad shape. For you to say you have no sympathy is rather harsh. I understand that when people drive like all fast and crazy - whether they are on a bike or not - they put themselves along with other drivers in danger. But to have "no synpathy" for someone in a bad crash like that is rather harsh.

Should he have been going slower? Probably yes. But technically it was the fault of the guy driving the car from the ramp across Rt 5 for not yielding to oncoming traffic on the main road, NOT the fault of the guy on the bike. If the guy on the bike was going slower, could he have avoided the accident? Possibly. But that is pure speculation.

Yeah, it pretty much is. Crotch Rockets, sport bikes, hyper sport bikes, are not for people who drive the speed limit and ride defensively. Are all sport bike riders maniacs? No. However, riding a motorcycle, any bike, is not the province of the conservative conformist to begin with and sport bikes are the condensed group of us riders who take an otherwise rather...free spirited...activity and go further with it. Faster, more aggressive, more risks.

Corvette drivers don't drive mini vans.

We don't drive Corvettes.

Harsh, yep? I dont have a problem with that. If you engage in behavior that leads to your injury, too freaking bad. I use a table saw with no blade guard and cut my hand? I was stupid to use it so and not take the extra caution required to avoid injury.

Assigning fault of any kind is pure speculation at this point, we have no data to back up any of it. Its possible that the biker was going so fast that it just wasn't possible for the guy in the car to see him in time. Remember that young girl who was killed bye the trooper in Calvert last year? The fault was his because he was exceeding the limit top such an extent that she couldn't know he was coming. Folks look down the road to a certain extent, based on how far away impinging traffic should be, based on speed.

If you look 1/4 mile down the road, because a car going 70 will not affect you, then you wont see the guy going 120, he is much farther away, but he will be in your space before the guy going 70 would be.

Im not going to argue with you. All I said was it is harsh to say you dont have sypathy for someone who is injured. If you cut your hand using a table saw without a guard, I may think you foolish, but I can almost guarantee that I'd feel bad for you. Are we to not feel bad for the girl who lost her leg on the Drop Zone in Kings Dominion (Busch Gardens? One of them) a few years back, because she rode the ride at her own risk???

I live in Calvert and drive by the accident site of that young girl every day. I remember when it happened. That situation is different than the situation with the accident on Rt 5 because you can only see so far down Rt 4 where the girl was crossing to head into her neighborhood. In this situation the guy in the car had pleanty of time to see the guy on the bike, IMO, especially since it was dark and he could have seen the headlights. BUT, I digress... if the guy on the bike was truly flying, then its just as much his fault as the guy in the car. But that dosnt mean I dont have sympathy for the fact that he was beat to hell and had to be flown out as a result of the accident.

Not argument, discussion. :buddies: I do have sympathy for folks who get injured through no fault of their own. If the girl on the amusement park ride had stuck her leg out somewhere she was told not to, no sympathy. But that's not the case, she was injured through a mechanical malfunction of some kind.

If you want to sympathize with folks who got themselves injured that's fine, I choose not to. You may call it harsh, I disagree.

As for what happened, and who could see who, its hard to say. Heres the street view looking up the roadway from that stop sign.

Google Maps

So, you can see up the road for a little distance, maybe about 1,000 feet before the guardrail obscures your vision, at 80 that would be around 10 seconds, so he should have been able to see the biker. Was there intervening traffic in the slow lane that chopped that distance? Or was the biker doing 90? If so, thats 132fps, or covering the 1000 feet in 7.5 seconds. Combine that with a car in slow lane obscuring the biker til say 500 feet out, maybe the driver didnt have enough time to see the biker. could be he saw him, and did what a lot of drivers do when it drops in the pan, just locks up. We just dont know.

I will say road rash is preventable, though.

We don't have all the facts, so saying who is at fault just doesnt work.

You're right... discussion :buddies:

I understand what you're saying about "self-inflicted" injury vs. injury due to mechanical malfunction. However with the amusement park synerio, when you buy the ticket you are essentially signing a "ride at your own risk" waiver. So whether or not injury was caused due to mechanical malfunction or not, the rider is held responsible for putting themselves in that situation. Just to add to the discussion...

I think your map is a little off. I tried to do the same thing but when posting links to the maps in this forum, it changes the view... What you get is almost a "defult" view which is actually useless in this discussion because its 1.) the wrong part of the road and 2.) its looking North

There is the slight turn on Rt 5 before the Harley dealership, but the guy in the car should have seen the bike's lights and not tried to make it across. While, of course, the guy on the bike may have been driving too fast to be able to avoid the accident.

Who knows....

Bad Google picture, glhs.

I agree about the speed issue also. I've been passed by flying rice going well over 100 mph right there.
I ride by that intersection a few times a week and I now approach it with caution because I've been sitting at the stop sign too. Again, that stupid mountain of dirt needs to go!!

Today I rode down rte 5 southbound on my Harley and, as I approached it, I got in the left lane and momentarily dropped my speed to about 45. I already know where I will go IF someone is at the stop sign and starts to move forward.
Going 45, I can either change lanes and go behind the car or hit the horn and cross over the small cement barrier on my left. I always have an "out"...I just hope the guy behind me stops too.
