I find the Noah's Ark story creepy

I feel your pain. However, people believe what they believe and there's really nothing you can do about it. Even when you point out the inconsistencies, they STILL believe what they want to believe. They operate on "feeling" and "faith", rather than fact so there's no way to refute it nor should you even bother to try.

Good point. The only time that affects me is when people like that get in my face and say "You're going to hell!" What a hateful thing to say to someone.

When Matt Groening was in high school, there was a group of fundamentalist students that went around the school telling Jewish students they were going to hell. So Matt and a few of his classmates started a joke group called Teens for Decency. They would try to recruit other students, and when they received a rejection, they would say "What, are you against decency?" to complete the joke.

That's not right. The only person that knows if you are going to hell or not is you.

But that would be judging yourself, and I thought you said only god can do that?

I've worked in Morocco, Turkey, and Rome---and I daresay that although my studies were mainly focused upon Assyrian civilization, I am rather well versed in most other related subjects.

What in the world are you doing in godforsaken Southern Maryland?

The truth is you can have faith, feeling and fact!

Newton's 1st law is actually wrong.

It just so happens that it's so friekin' close and significantly less complicated that we can get away with using it for all of our worldly scientific projects.

When you start talking about things on the astronomical scale, Newton's 1st law is actually wrong.

I could try to explain it but I'd have to digging through all my astrodynamics textbooks from college and then relearn it. :frown:

But without the fact part, you're nothing but a fanatic. The Bible like everything in life, should be taken with a grain of salt.

True, but only one of them is valid - fact. You can have faith that the mail will come today, but that doesn't mean it will. You can feel like someone was rude to you, but that doesn't mean they were.

Your feelings and faith can't be proven - facts can. It's like fundamentalists that don't believe in evolution, which is something we can actually observe while it's going on. Yet they say, "No...no...God made everything perfect and just the way he wanted it the first time around." They feel like this is true and they have faith that it's true, but the fact is, it's not true.

I've always felt that we have faith in the things that can't be proven, not that faith itself can't be proven. I can prove my faith without a doubt, but I can't prove that what I have faith in does indeed exist.
I can't show you "love", but I can also be sure it exists without being able to prove it.

Exactly! Because that's what faith is all about. If you could prove it, you wouldn't have to rely on faith - you'd be relying on fact.

I have faith that Larry's not boinking the neighbor chick. If I actually caught Larry boinking the neighbor chick, my faith would be blown out of the water because now I'm presented with fact. But some people get so invested in their faith that they ignore anything that might rock it. THAT'S where fanatics come in.

Pssst. Larry, I think you just got permission to boink anyone except the neighbor chick.

So you evolved from an amoeba? You don't really believe this do you? Show me the facts!

Modern man evolved from an amoeba. I, personally, evolved from an egg that was fertilized by a sperm.

If you don't believe in evolution, there's no point in trying to have a discussion with you.

Sooo... An amoeba that lived in the ocean saw the land and said hmmm, I want to live on the land. So because the desired to live on the land the grew legs and turned into salamanders.... Then once they got on land they somehow desired to walk or climb trees so they grew arms and legs. Then one day while swinging through the trees we caught our tail on a limb, jerked it off and we've been walking and talking since.

So if I desire to grow two heads, I could. If I desired to fly, I could grow wings and fly? I guess that is why our ocean is still full of amoeba. Hmmm... So where did man and woman come from. I guess we just thought-up the concept of sex and producing young and desired to do that too. So therefore we grew the appropriate organs. :bubble:

Its actually an approximation, a very good one especially for Newtons known universe in the 17th century. It applies to all things except the very small (quantum physics) and the very large (relativety). Today some physists are trying to develop a theory of everything called "string theory" that covers everything.

PS I think I actually met you the other day in a meeting.

By your strict intepretation of the bible this would mean if someone can't talk they are going to go to hell.

What happens to retarded people that can't grasp the concept? Do they go to hell?

You mean the Universal Equation? Read Hawkin's "Brief History of Time"...

What kind of meeting?

It's the story of a flood, a guy hopping on a boat with his farm animals, blowing it out of proportion, and going down in history.
