I'm glad I stuck with XP, my new desktop when I bought it came with a free upgrade to Vista when it was released. I never did the free upgrade and have no plans to.

Anti-Virus subscriptions are well worth it.

I haven't had many tech issues with Vista so far. It's just taking a while to get use to the way files are organized on this bad boy. I'm a Capricorn...this is driving me bananas.

Vista=POS

I'm tired of having to buy and run virus scans, spyware removal tools, etc. every frigging time I use my computer.

I agree. My next will be a Mac again as well. There isn't anything I can do on a PC that I can't do as well or better on a Mac.

Well, lets see, the virus was so bad that it actually was uninstalling things like my DVD ROM and it actually screwed up my IP address! It also would not shut down at all unless I pushed and held the power button. The Tech guy could not even get it to reset the IP address so he could do remote assistance! This was just the last virus that I somehow transferred onto the computer when I reformatted the second time. I have a feeling it was hiding on my external harddrive, so that got reformatted to! ALL of my files are GONE! I am beginning to believe that when this computer goes tits up I am going to get a Mac also! :tantrum

I've never met anyone who had a virus problem who was running up to date virus protection. Are people really seeing viruses that are getting through? Or are people not using protection?

I've been running the same PC, the same OS (XP) for 4 years, not one hit. I use AVG, keep it up-to-date, have it check my incoming email, windows firewall turned on (not that it's the best, but it's better than nothing) and the PC sits behind a router/firewall, all basic must-do steps. If you get a virus, it's just a matter of poor housekeeping.

I WAS running Norton 360 and it was up to date. :shrug: Beats the hell out of me on how it got by the security but it did! I ran I don't know how many different free virus scans on top of that and it never picked it up! I just hope this AVG is all its supposed to be and keeps it from happening again! I am at my wits end with this sh!t!

It's possible you did not have a virus, but rather a spyware/adware that didn't get detected. They can cause as much grief as a virus. There are a few good free products there too, AdAware SE, SpyBot...

Hope you have better luck this time around!

I'm sorry I don't agree with that! I was very avid about doing CCleaner and my virus scans DAILY and keeping things up to date. It takes one click on the wrong website to get smacked and that is most likely what happened to me! I also had Norton's Firewall, Windows Firewall, the router's firewall and Windows Defender running. I have used Trend Micro's free scan for many years and if there was something to be caught it usually caught it. But not this time. I am definitely not a poor housekeeper! :wench:

I ran those two and several others, NONE of them picked up this as a spyware! I ran Stinger, the latest version, I ran Microsoft's Malware tool and nothing was picked up. This thing was relentless!

Ok, sorry....:ohwell: didn't mean to raise the fur... sounds like you were doing all the right things, not sure how you got hit. It would be interesting, if you get the same kind of hit again, to let someone see what it was and how it got there, before you wiped it out.
