Statistically that is not provable beyond correlation, and logically the opposite can be argued. An armed person may show more restraint than one that is unarmed in many cases thereby not letting the situation escalate. We can never know how many attacks were avoided because of this and we can only count the attacks that did occur and that leads us to Russia.I know they don't but if you have the gun in your possession and you are having a heated arguement over "whatever" there is a greater chance you are going to shoot somebody than if you have to lunge at somebody and bash their brains in or look for a nearby rock etc. I met some felons I would never want to see have a gun again.
In Russia there is no private ownership of handguns and as a result handgun murder rate is lower than it is in the US....but overall murder is many times higher than in the US. If the idea that no gun means fewer incidents leading to murder is based on stats, then statistically Russia probably disproves that idea through correlation too.
