I'm a bad daddy

baby momma has the parent abuser tonight. She just called...

Me: Is she dead? It's 10:00
her: No, but I need to know what meds you have her on. So, I can have someone run out and get more.
Me: Why?
her: She's coughing and has a runny nose. I don't like seeing her like this.
Me: It's a cold; she'll live.
her: What meds do you have her on?
Me: I don't have her on anything. It's a fricken' cold.
her: alright *click*

Princess is 12 months old. She doesn't have a fever and she's not coughing that bad. Last I checked, you can't go shoving meds down an infants throat and a cold is nothing to get bent over. Yes, it sucks that she's waking herself up coughing once or twice a night, but it's not gonna kill her and honestly, she's not miserable, she's as happy as she always is. Am I the only one thinkin' the chick is neurotic?

I'm seriously wondering how long it is before she calls 911 or calls back asking me to take her to the hospital. Because of her, I've already taken the kid to the hospital at 01:00 once for what turned out to be croupe. :ohwell:

Big respect for you, and what you're going through...But, perhaps you should keep this to yourself?

If she is waking herself up once or twice a night with this cough, she is not getting a good nights sleep and that's what she needs most....

when my mutts where her age and they got a cold with a cough like that, I would give them something for the cough right before bedtime(dr. prescribed dosage)

definitely, because if mine is miserable, I am miserable. Tylenol cold...i know they have something called little noses, little colds....something like that. I gave the prescribed amount...sometimes a little less. I put a humidifier in her room, made sure she was getting plenty of fluids a day, and tried to make her feel as comfortable as I could. Babies get colds, but you just have to find your own little remedies as well. Medicine as the store doesn't always work, but it sure couldn't hurt. I wish I was there to see her, she is one beautiful little girl.

I don't believe in medicating children unless absolutely necessary. It kills their immune system because their body doesn't learn to fight off bugs on its own.

So I agree with you, Chain. If she doesn't have a fever and just a slight cough, save the meds for when she really needs them.

HA! I'm a worse momma! My littlest kid got CPS called on me today! He went crying to this school counselor that his brother beats him up and his sister insults him and they all freaked out and thought the child was being abused or something. Now I'm in a pickle and all it was was him wanting some attention! THANK GOD everyone who knows us (including his teacher and the school vice principal) knows this is not the case. So don't call yourself a bad daddy yet. The best is yet to come!

Would THIS face lie?
When I was young (many many years ago) my Grandmother used to give me coal oil and sugar mixed together for my cough...I think it worked because I was afraid to cough again...

:yeahthat: I had them out to inspect the house and interview me when the kid went to school after bruising her arm on a trampoline.

Air, if it hadn't been for the fact that I was drinking last night, I probably wouldn't have posted.

The thing is, she'll go right back to sleep if you give her a minute or two. And if that wasn't the case, at 12 months old it's not like she has to be awake during set hours, she can make up for it later.

What blows my mind is, the nurse and the school counselor are aware that the child is on new medication for siezures and that it has made him an emotional wreck, yet they swallowed his story hook, line and sinker and called CPS anyway. I just don't get this school system. You try your best to be a good parent and you get your chops busted anyway. I had called about some children that I knew were going without electricity and water and had no food in the house because I was worried about them and they got all nasty with me and said that there was no crime with being poor! I just don't get it!

I've already dealt with them because of a few reports made on her. They checked me out and when I asked for an update and if they'd investigated her, they said "since she's under the care of another sub-dept. of SS, we don't see the point in that." :banghead:

you are right that a cold may not be much, but it could turn into something much worse.....i know when mine have a cold or a cough, i always give them something for it to help when they are sleeping...a child needs their sleep.

It's a moot point. All the effective meds for a child that age for a cold were taking off the market because parents weren't reading the directions properly and it was too easy to give them too much.

Vicks vaporrub makes a baby version that works ok. They also make a vaporizing nightlight thingy, but I never used that. There's not much else to do.

I don't believe in medicating children unless absolutely necessary. It kills their immune system because their body doesn't learn to fight off bugs on its own.

Cold medicine doesn't affect the germs, so it has nothing to do with immunity. Your body must still fight the virus in order to get over the cold.

The only thing cold medicine does is treat the symptoms and make you feel more comfortable. That can be good and bad. If you are unable to sleep you weaken your immunity.

Decongestants can seriously dry out mucus membranes, leaving them raw and irritated, thereby prolonging a cold. They can also act as stimulants, increasing blood pressure and preventing sleep.

The best advice is to let a cold run its course and don't fall for the pharmaceutical company hype that we need to treat every symptom we have.

Well, you needed to say that then :smack:....the first thought that flashed in my head was her having a "coughing fit" and being up for more than a couple of minutes
