I thought that law went into effect last year, but apparently that was just sending and not reading.

So now we get to kick it old school. Chill out and realize that whatever you feel you must communicate right that very second isn't really that crucial.

Nope. No texting while your vehicle is on the road, whether it's moving or not. Of course, it's unlikely you'll be caught if you're stuck in traffic and send a quick note to the fam that you'll be late getting home.

I have an app called Drivesafe.ly and it reads me my texts, then allows me to record a response, which gets translated (for the most part ) to text for the recipient. Completely hands-free. So I wonder if that's illegal, too? I should have asked when I was at the meeting.

SUX, because I do just that and don't think it's dangerous to text and read text while stopped in traffic that's just sitting there (ex. b'more during rush hour traffic not St. Mary's 235 rush hour traffic). So what's the fine for this?

Vria, you'ld be suprised, I bet more people will get caught stuck in traffic because they won't realize that for the last hour there has been a cop sitting in their blind spot, but he'll be able to see them text.

Well that would be quite subjective in enforcing this law. Everyone would want to be on the police force. I know a few tickets for stupidity that I'd like to hand out.

I wonder why they excluded reading texts from the first law anyway?

When we wuz kids, it used to be called 'reckless driving' and it pretty much covered any and everything that lead one to crash into something or cause others to crash when it shouldn't have happened.

Drunk driving and run into someones house? Reckless driving.
Eating a sandwich and slip on the steering wheel and t bone a school bus? Reckless driving.

Spill your coffee, cigarette mishap, lipstick, reading the paper, beating the children, fiddling with the radio and have or cause an accident? Reckless driving.

Now, in our never ending pursuit of Nirvana (or some other crap Seattle band) we forget all about the constitution and fine and arrest folks for what MIGHT have happened.

Want Wreck-less driving? Ban cars and make everyone ride motorcycles. Less mess when things go awry and folks will pay a WHOLE lot more attention to their operation of their vehicle.

I think many are going to continue texting, and very few will get ticketed.

I think this because:
I was at a stop light today on 235 and Pegg. A LEO had pulled over someone, they were having business in the far left turn lane. I'm in the middle lane. A women pulls up on my left, between me and the LEO, just chatting away on her cell. Another LEO pulls up behind he first one, gets out, starts walking towards the first LEO, sees the woman chatting away, looks straight at her, she ignores him, and he turns away.

No words, no warnings. The light turns green and she continues forward still chatting away.

Yup.....I can see it now.....

LEO: 'Well.....you were holding your phone up to your ear.'
ME: 'Yeah.....I was TALKING to someone.'
LEO: 'You sure you weren't texting and just holding the phone to your ear to disguise it?'
THAT is gonna be the cause for the rise in traffic court proceedings.....people having to spend the money and time to go to court for talking on the phone.
