I went to a bar last weekend, and ordered a round of drinks. I signed the receipt and didn't put a tip because the bartender was so incredibly rude. So I am checking my bank account today, and apparently the bartender took it upon herself to add four dollars onto the merchant copy....so it became 24. That is soo irritating. Can they do that? Especially if you have already signed it and totalled it out?
Yes, they can do that. You need to put in "$0.00" or draw a slash/ziggy line in the tip line to keep them from filling it in the tip.
You need to take your copy and "bank statement" to the resturant and ask to speak with a manager. The manager will takes care of it. Before you leave, make sure you are able to get a "credit" back. If not, then go to your bank, file "dispute" form and explain your situation to the bank person who is helping you.
I had something like that happened to me last year. Someone stole my credit card number and tried to get away with paying for alot of pizzas with my credit card in Fort Worth, Texas. I have never been to Texas and I was late in pregnancy, so there was no way I could have go all the way to Texas and back home within a day. After discovering the charge, I went to my bank and they took care it with no problems. I was able to get my money back and new credit card right on spot.
