:howdy: I want that. I want them to turn me in to one of those plastic people they put on display. :jet:
My brother wants to be donated to "The Body Farm" where they throw the dead bodies in the woods or swamp or whatever they may be studying at the time and then document the decaying process and use this info for forensic science.

I understood before.

You are under no obligation to take your MIL into your home. In this country there is no such thing as being thrown out on the street. She applies for state aid and they throw her in a home. End of story.

Yes there is. She cannot get aid and go into a "home" unless she meets the level of care standards. If she doesn't, get doesn't get a lot of aid. There are other types of assistance but none that pays fully for a nursing home or assisted living facility.

:yeahthat: Can't stress enough that the more impoverished she is, the better off she'll be. A friend of mine had to get rid of an $8000 burial policy her grandmother had in order to qualify to get her a room in an assisted care living facility. :ohwell:

My parents are totally screwed. They're not wealthy enough to have ton of retiremement, but not impoverished enough to get major assistance. No matter what happens they'll have a place to go, my sister and I will share the responsibility.

rent is subsidised.
And I have only heard of long waiting list Elder Care apartments as well. There seem to be more destitute old people than spots to put them in...

Oh, I've heard of that! That would be kind of cool too, but I think I'd still go with plastic embalming. :yay:

Is this really true? I have only ever heard of waiting list for such "homes"
Actually, the places that we've investigated for our mom, the waiting period is very narrow. If we wanted to put mom in nursing care tomorrow, we'd probably be able to do it. However, I'm sure that the scenario would be much different if we had to rely on Medicare to pay for her nursing home care. If there is self-pay or insurance doing the paying, the nursing home will bend over backwards to get you in. From waht I can gather - and I may be wrong - the Medicare slots are few, and the demand high, so the wait can be awhile to get a Medicare-paying space. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

She has already established that there is no money for them to pay for a nursing facility and there is no insurance so her mother would be in need of one of the few medicare slots that are in high demand.

You have to meet the level of care to even be considered for a medicare slot. My 95 year old grandmother who has osteoporosis does not qualify.

So Vrai's and Ap's assumptions that the government will just take care of it are overreaching and rdkarob has valid concern and will most likely be moving MIL into the play room. :ohwell:

Or she could say, "Too bad - you did it, you sit in it," and refuse to take responsibility for her in-laws' mistakes.

If it were Larry's Mom, I'd take her in in a heartbeat because she's a joy. My own mother....my Dad loves me enough that he's made arrangements so that she'll never have to take up residence in my house.

There's nothing rdkarob can do about how her in-laws are spending their money right now. She can rant about it and find a sympathetic ear, but that's about it.
