Is the "N" word going to be obsolete?

The hell they didn't. Maybe Chinese railroad workers weren't technically slaves, but they were definitely exploited and subjugated.
That's just a tad different than being sold to a Master 100 miles away while your wife and kids stay.

there is a big difference. The US never used latino's, chinese and muslims as slaves.
Funny, I thought I learned in history that society (not just the US) tried mutliple races and ethnicities as slaves, to include hispanics, native americans, chinese etc.. . and found the African slave to be the most cost effective (used due to lack of a better term).

I thought that's what he was talking about. I'll reread the article.
Then why is he calling for the boycott of Seinfeld Season Seven, and not Kanye West's latest CD??

I'm not sure why hip-hop stars and other young blacks began using the N-word. Maybe they were trying to deprive the word of its emotional power. I've read that "black" was originally a derogatory word used by whites, and was later adopted by blacks as a word of pride.

The N-word is all over "Huckleberry Finn" in the interest of realism - the word has always been derogatory, but that is the only word that whites like Huck in the mid-1800s ever knew for blacks. And people much wiser than myself have described the novel's strong antiracist message - Jim is the most human character in the story, and he has a strong conscience. That's not true of most of the whites that Huck and Jim encountered.

Richard Pryor famously disowned the N-word after a trip to Africa. Young blacks should follow his example.

One thing that happened to me that was magic was that I was leaving, sitting in the hotel lobby, and a voice said, “What do you see? Look around.” And I looked around, and I looked around, and I saw people of all colors and shapes, and the voice said, “You see any n*****s?” I said, “No.” It said, “You know why? ‘Cause there aren’t any.” There ain’t no n*****s in Africa! ‘Cause I’d been there three weeks and hadn’t said it once. And it started making me cry, man. All that s**t. All the acts I’ve been doing. As an artist and comedian. Speaking and trying to say something. And I been saying that. That’s a devastating f*****g word. That has nothing to do with us We are from a place where they first started people.

They also came over to the US on their own free will, and got paid to work. black slaves didnt.

Again, technically. But all countries/cultures have a history of slavery in some form - it's not just the US.

Basic manners 101. Apparently that class isn't being taught any more these days, hence the rampant use of ethnic slurs.

The entire hypocrisy behind how we are defining free speech and having any level of self discipline will cause this to be a discussion for a long time. Our skins have grown too thin. Our tolerance (in a so-called tolerant society) has become intolerant to the extreme. You want to stop hearing the N word? Stop saying it. Simple as that. The fact that a group has to speak out against the use of the word speaks to a larger problem. This subject has very little to do with the N word. Look at what is broadcast on TV during prime time. Listen to what is broadcast on our radio stations; all in the name of free speech and expression. TV, movies, music, video games, etc… What freedom do we lose when we allow free speech to the extreme? We lose our right to not be offended and verbally violated. We lose our societal dignity. Am I suggesting laws be enacted to stop such defaming language in the public square? Absolutely not! Somewhere along the line we have also lost our sense of personal responsibility as “civilized” human beings. We have chosen to define things in the least amount of words possible. Culminate that with an extremely low level of self-discipline and respect for others and you have the proverbial N word. This secular/progressive society (SPs as Bill O’Reilly would call it) we are headed towards not only defines this mentality; it demands it. Now that the snowball is half way down the hill, can it be stopped? I have my doubts.
