if you will
I'm hoping SMECO crews are ready. I really don't want to be without power for a week. I'm already predicting I'll lose power for a few days (bye bye all fridge/freezer food), at least one tree will hit the house (we're surrounded by trees), and my small basement will be full of water (no battery back up for sump pump, and no generator).

So, you think all the genereators in the area have all been bought up?

Might that give her chance to peter out a little bit before she hits us? By Friday she might be CAT 1 or less... and maybe even turn Northeast.

Lowes had a few generators left yesterday. Good ones too, Troy built with 10hp motor.:yay:

good thing I emptied my freezer this weekend :ohwell: and no, I didn't eat everything in it  actually, I threw everything away. I'm bad about buying stuff that looks good, tossing it in the freezer, then never eating it. :ohwell: I'm sure it was all freezer-burnt. :barf:

I am skeered of the hurricane (any big storm, really). :frown: I've been assured I won't have to sit through it alone though, so I'm sure I'll manage. :bubble:

Wishful thinking I'm afraid.

what do you look for when buying a generator? i know nothing about them, but think it might not be a bad deal to pick one up. what do they run (electrically and financially) and how do you determine how much generator to get?

Not sure; but know of at least two people in my office that are going out to purchase some after work. (probably the same with a bunch of others this afternoon.)

Size of motor, 10hp minimum. The amount of running watts, which is the actual amount that you can draw as far as current, and look at what you want to power. You're not going to power your entire house unless you get one big generator, but you can power essentials. I have an 8550 wt and can power refrig, freezer, some lights and another appliance. Make sure it has a good size gas tank too.

it takes gas? :blushing:

I seriously know nothing about these things. Maybe I'd be better off letting the power stay off during a storm than blowing my own house up trying to get electricity. :yikes:

How else would it keep running.

Seriously though, get gas now, if the power goes off or computers get hit the pumps won't work. And also take out some cash from the bank before Thursday, just precautionary, the ATM's won't be working either.

How do you get the electricity the generator generates into the house? My house doesn't have a power cord I can plug into anything . . .

Most come with a pigtail type connectors, but you can get a licensed electrician to wire an outlet and switching relay straight into your main circuit breaker box. They have them so that they will switch when power comes back on line so as not to damage anything. Otherwise use extension cords to get to the appliances you want to power.

I am wondering if I shouldn't spend Thursday night in DC, instead of having to worry about commuting back and forth on Friday, just in case it does hit us. What do ya'll think?

Is skipping work on Friday an option? What would be the consequences?

You're talking massive there, an electircian can come and install a plug into your fuse box to connect to a large generator but most people just buy small ones and plug in certain items like a freezer.
