PS Dig your tag line. He's my fave president in history. I have a cat named Harry Truman.

It's just a connector that plugs a male end into the generator and branches off into 3 or 4 outlets to plug cords into. I keep meaning to get my house wired so I can go straight into my circuit breaker box and use the breakers to turn on and off what I need, but I'm stupid and haven't gotten around to it yet. So I still use extension cords. Use heavey duty cords and don't try to branch them off with the smaller cords and power more appliances. It won't handle it. You don't have to run things like freezer and refer constantly, just run as needed. In the winter time I run the blower on my woodstove and heat the house with it when power goes out. Works great.

I caught all kinds of heck for missing work the day when we had all the snowfall and a state of emergency was called by the governor. :ohwell:

I told my boss today that Thursday night I'm staying at the firehosue and I'd be in late on Friday. She didn't have any problems with it. Most supervisors are not as heartless as most people think they are, you shouldn't have any problems, I would hope.

Bertha,

You will need a cord with the prongs on both ends (aka pigtail). Inside the house trip the “main” breakers feeding your panel commercial electricity and then turn off all breakers that you won’t need. Plug the cord into the generator and into an exterior outlet (make sure you left that breaker on). Fire up the generator and then you will have power to those circuits you left on.

Strung Out
Generators...

...do yourself a favor and enjoy the disconnect from our wired world for a day or two.

If you MUST have power a small gas unit of around 3000 watts, $2-300, is all you need to run the fridge and a computer or TV. Get you some extension cords and extra gas.

Figure maybe 3 hours per gallon of gas. So, if you HAVE TO, you're looking at 8 gallons PER DAY. You don't need to run the
fridge non stop to keep it cold enough (unless you are depending on the ice maker) especially if you stay out of it as much as possible.

Refer back to plan 'a' and enjoy.

Automatic units that have larger fuel tanks and automatic transfer switches are going to start at $2000 plus installation. And won't work when you need them because people don't maintain them. Because you never need them. Nobody is going to install one by Friday.

Refer back to plan 'a'...

I'm with you. Forget generators, I'll be moving my lawn and deck furniture, trash cans and lawn mower inside and heading to DC.

Maybe - but I thought he'd probably be safer if I boarded him instead of leaving him home alone unsupervised and then the worst happens.

You might want to call the DC humane society for some tips, pulled this from their site.

"If you must evacuate, do not leave your animals behind. Evacuate them to a prearranged safe location if they cannot stay with you during the evacuation period. (Remember, pets are not allowed in American Red Cross shelters.) If there is a possibility that disaster may strike while you are out of the house, there are precautions you can take to increase your pets' chances of survival, but they are not a substitute for evacuating with your pets. For more information, contact The Humane Society of the United States, Disaster Services, 2100 L Street NW, Washington, DC 20037. "
