Israel authorizes 'severe' response to abductions

BTW, I'm with FT and Chain on this. The Israeli soldiers may be alive, but I'd be willing to bet that they'd be killed if the Israeli forces got too close. Or the hostage takers are waiting for the right time to kill them and make a spectacle out of it. Either way, I don't think Israel is performing a rescue operation. They are at war and performing pretty standard tactics. First step...cut main logistics and communications lines. I wouldn't be surprised if they start hitting power stations soon.

My take:

The soldiers are an excuse. What is it - two guys and they'd risk how many more deaths to get them back? I don't think so.

This is no Entebbe with a specific covert mission - this is a public declaration that they're not going to take this crap anymore. And I don't blame them one little bit. If these stupid countries would reign in their terrorist organizations, they wouldn't be having these problems.

We get all excited about illegal Mexicans, but they're not kidnapping people and blowing themselves (and innocent civilians) up at our grocery stores. Imagine if they were, and now you know how Israel feels.

No, but they are serving Pete burritos. Their attacks may just be more deadly.

I don't know if I'd call it an excuse, but its the same point. The Israelis reaction has been clearly stated that they will put a hurting on Hezbollah and 'pressure' the Lebanese gov't to do something about it. The way I see it, this a potential cross roads here because the weak Lebanese gov't can't really do much to control Hezbollah (or the southern border), so Israel has to reoccupy the southern border area, smash Hezbollah, or both. Alternatively, the Israelis can put a stranglehold on the Lebanese populace in the hopes that they realize that tacitly supporting/not standing up against Hezbollah will make their lives eternally miserable. Anway, this is a fight between Syria/Iran and Israel that is being fought on Lebanese soil, and in the end the Lebanese people suffer. In a way I kind of wish the Iranians would just pick the fight themselves so Israel could light up the real culprits here.

You are comparing apples to oranges..The mexicans want to be here and are not after land that was taken from them. If mexico decided to take texas and move in mexicans, would you be complaining if americans were taking out the "occupiers"? Thats the way they see it.

While some coutries support them, most cannot control terrorist organizations any more than we could simply because the government is too poor or don't know who they are.

Why not?? If we acted like we valued our soldiers this much, ours wouldn't be getting kidnapped. You have to ask, if they took the president how would we react? We should react similarly to one of our soldiers being kidnapped, but of course Jimmy Carter told the world how important Americans really are.

After listening to some analysts Friday I've completely changed my mind. Their take was that this whole kidnapping thing is being engineered by Iran. If not to take attention away from their nuclear problems, then definately to thrust themselves into a position of leader of the Arab world. Hezbolah doesn't make a move without clearing it with Iran, so once again Iran is a problem.

I think we need to get Israel to withdrawl while we move two or three more divisions into Iraq. We'll lie and call them peacekeeping troops just out to deter zionist agression or some horse crap. Then we green light the Israelis to bag Lebanon and Syria and we do a powersweep from the Sunni triangle to Tehran, and just wipe out the insurgents, the dead-enders, and the Iranians in one massive effort. No more insurgents sneaking into Iraq from Syria and Iran, no more nuclear threats from Iran, no more Hezbollah, and a massive reduction in Arab BS.

You're giving these animals too much credit for thinking. We are too pussiefied to do anything about anything anymore. Israel will take care of the problem like it should be taken care of. You ever hear of a prisoner of Israel being tortured with a pair of panties?

Then why don't we have active terrorist organizations in the US?
CNN doesn't give them the airplay Al-Jezeera does.

Yet.

You think they might be capitulating just a little before Israel bombs the poop out of them and their nukes?

They sparked a war w/ Israel from behind the scenese as their weapons and elite soldiers are involved... this is propaganda w/out meaning. They don't want to really capitulate. They want to make it look like they are up to nothing because the ignorant masses buy this crap. You would think people learned after Tariq Aziz -- "We are winning the war. There are no U.S. in Baghdad"...

One thing the Middle East has learned well over the years is how to manipulate the media.
