If they're flying around trying to burn fuel, why wouldn't they have gone on to NYC and landed somewhere out that way? At least then the passengers would be closer to where they're supposed to be.

It would take forever flying from LA to NY with the nose gear down. AND at that moment they want to stay close to the airport where all the emergency equipment is than flying over Kansas and having the nose strut fall into a house on the way.
