If you look at historical data, you can kind of forecast the major storms that would knock out power. How often does SM get hit with major storms? How reliable is the grid? How many times a year do you lose power to need/justify all that?
I have a generator in my shed that I run a 150' cord to my panel and back feed thru the water heater breaker if I determine that power will be out for more than a couple of hours so far in the 24 years we have lived here it ran 1-2 times for about 3 hours.lights and receptacles work as well has well pump other high amp draw equipment I turn off doesnt take that long to set up my next home will have a whole house generator for sure.
Hurrican Sandy, a 100 year storm, had some up north without power for 4 weeks or more, no water, heat in 20 degree weather. Trees falling did the damage. Buying a generator? It's insurance.
