Just Got a New Generator

Of Course ....

I just wanted to point out these Mini Splits that are maybe Solar Only at the device ....
..and would require us to install solar panels on the clubhouse. And their own battery backup too, since they have to run at night.

It's far more than just a/c. It's a total power solution. Switching a/c units to low power mini-splits later might be beneficial, but right now, the intent is to replace (mostly) the diesel power.

And many are finding that the mini-splits are having reliability issues and regret installing them.

I have a Sanyo 18000 BTU mini split that with 5kw back up heat strip I installed in my beach house in 1978 still runs like a top, never replaced a single part except for batteries in the controller.

Not long after we installed the Mitsubishi 24,000 BTU units (with 4 x 6000 BTU air handlers) we had a power issue with the generator and it went low voltage...totally blew the control electronics board in one of the main mini-split outdoor units. ;-( That was almost 2 years ago though, and they've been reliable since then. Fingers crossed.

In our case, the mini-split systems replaced a bunch of small window AC units (8 total) and, on one wing, electric resistance heat in each room, and in the other wing, an ancient oil-fired hot air heating system with totally rusted out ducting.

Makes sense that you already swapped out the old window units.

Yep..and those EU generators are remarkably quiet too, especially in "ECO" mode and idling along. Back when we were camping more regularly and had our toy hauler camper, the 3000EU was what we carried with us to power the camper. Run all night keeping the AC going...no problem. And so quiet it didn't bother the "neighbors".
it ran 2 a/c units or you only have 1

Only been here two years, so this question, what's the longest stretch you SM natives recall being without power?

You folks with a propane fired, whole house generator, what size tank did you go with if needed?

IIRC about a week was the longest I can remember but that was back during the ice storm of '94.

Up here outside National Harbor the longest we have been without power post storm was 3 1/2 days after that Derecho Super Thunder Storm back in 2012

My neighbors and I were out for 7 days after a hurricane came thru (Isabel ?).

The propane question has a lot of possible answers. Depends on the generator, size, rating, whether or not it has an idle-down feature.....
As a rule, 10-15 hours on a 3500-6000 watt on a 20 lb tank at 50% load. Newer gennys get a longer run time with idle-down and inverter tech.

If your talking about a large 10,000 watt or larger stationary whole house, most people connect them to existing home natural gas.

500 gallon, bought and installed by myself.

Depends on if there is a woman involved, guys will run them intermittingly, women want them running 24/7.
Guys 200 gallons, women 1000 gallons and you're still gonna run out!

2 x 120 gallon tanks feeding our 12 kw propane Generac. Back after Isabel, we only had gasoline generators (a bunch of them)...kept them going for 11 days with help from friends hauling in ice and gasoline every day. Still have all the gas generators, of course.....about 30kw total capacity. Had this mobile 8kw rig back then too...moved it around a lot, to where ever it was needed most. Still have it...the welder/service body on a different truck now

How much can the 12k power?

It's connected to the 2-story apartment building and runs that plus the well that feeds the entire compound. But if we wanted to run AC and hot water and the well..that was sketchy, so we'd keep the AC off and the hot water heater we'd turn on and off "as needed". Pretty sure a 15kw genny would cover it all, especially now with a new variable-speed HVAC system installed last year.

You got any of them connected to load-shed?

nope..just connected to the tiki bar and beer cooler. Is that the same thing?
No, load shed drops off electrical loads when the generator is overloaded before it starts lugging the generator. Generac has connections in the transfers switch to do it and you can buy wireless modules to install away from the generator.
