K&N Filters

if the filter is hidden in the box how would they know anyway?

K&N sells a few kinds, some of which replace the entire intake pipe with a new setup. Drop in filters like you are talking about, not sure if those need it or not, but I know the whole systems do.

Mine isn't exactly hidden....

In My Opinion

Mine came with the new tube, but for the life of me, other than the color change, there really was no difference. So I left the old one in place.
Did change the intake from the box down however.

I wasn't addressing the law, only the concern with the oils from an over-oiled K&N screwing up the MAF sensor wire.

As far a legalities, while MD has adopted the same emissions standards as CA, I dont think they have adopted the same equipment requirements. Meaning that while your car will have to meet the same sniff check requirements, or, in newer vehicles, the same OBDII diagnostic plug in test, the emissions testers dont actually inspect the parts of the car to see if they are factory parts, barring obvious cases where idiots have replaced the catalytic converters with straight pipes.

See, in CA, if any part of the intake/engine/exhaust doesnt look stock (and they have pictures of stock setups) then by CA law, it must have a California Air Resources Board or "CARB" sticker with a valid Exemption Order number on it. And as a maker of parts, you have to spend tens of thousands of dollars getting the EO number from the CARB.

But, unless, I'm mistaken, there is no "MARB", and unless you fail the emissions tests, in those counties that have it, nobody is ever going to look twice at any mods you have, unless it's a silly POS intake made from Lowes PVC pipe and pantyhose.

Simply replacing the stock air filter with an aftermarket one; like a K&N; doesn't void any warranties; nor does it interfere with O2 sensors or MAF sensors.

Well, now warranty is a bit of a trickey subject, having very little to do with emissions law. The term "void" is tossed about will-nilly, but whats far more common than a warranty being voided is the dealership/regional rep placing restrictions on it, so that certain types of work are placed under a microscope.

In a perfect world, nothing you do to say your intake should ever cause a restriction on say your driveshaft. Over the years I have heard horror stories and seen logic twisted into freakin tesseracts to not cover work. Also stories of friendly dealerships that would ignore that aftermarket twin screw blower and get you a new engine covered under warranty. Far more of the former, of course.

And even if a place tells you your drop in wont affect your coverage, if thats nnot in writing, who knows what happens if you drop a valve and they see that bright orange K&N in there. Easy to say "See you in court", but the legal bills you end up with will be far more than the cost of the engine. And you probably dont have any handy engineers to testify about the effects of larger dust particles on the intake valve/keeper relationship on a molecular level:)

good point since to O2 monitors the exhaust gasses.

THAT is what I was thinking of.

On the intake end, it's the MAF sensor. That's it. O2 sensors are usually in the manifold somewhere. NOW I 'member.....

Just need to make sure the sensor sensor; the one that checks that all the other sensors are working, works.

You are actually going to put a cold air intake on a Cruze? Does anybody else see the absurdity in this?

No different than putting a fart can muffler on a 4 banger which sounds SO impressive (sarcasm) that the operator has to rev and overstress the motor to the point where you see nothing but a cloud of blue smoke coming out of that fart can from a totally shot motor.

Same result?

By itself, maybe not an idea that's going be helpful, but combined with other restriction removal mods and the proper programming to take advantage of that extra airflow, no reason why not.

High horsepower folks arent the only ones who might like a little more power, or better fuel efficiency.

Have you ever seen a sharp marble?

ALL OF THIS

Perhaps an ECU flash to go with the intake. You can get at least a little power from that 1.4T.

I have a Cruze with a drop-in K&N. :ashamed:

Why not?? It just might work.

It's only absurd if I ask you for the money to purchase said item, now AIN'T it.....
