its not about opening a small business, its about openning a smart small business... selling filtered water is a stupid idea... now if he had openned the healthy food store first, maybe it wouldn't flop... but he took a bad business decision...

He obviously has the money backing him so why not try something innovative?

I will go try it out this weekend and should I like what I'm getting I will continue to go so that it doesn't go out of business in 2 months. A black business doing something positive is worth my support. :flowers:

so if it was a white guy, or hispanic, or asian guy selling water, then wha? you'd be bashing it too? *confused*

That water shop makes about as much sense as opening a bar that only sells non alcaholic beer.

If I wanted to buy bottled water I would go to the grocery store next door or call Deerpark and have it delivered to my door.

Dude its a cafe. Its not a "water store." They sell other things.

Are you kidding, I buy from everyone. I buy flowers on the side of the road and on my 1.5hr long ass drive in the summer I will cough up $1 and buy myself a bottle of water. And yes, I would not feel right if I didn't support black owned business too (see the word "too").

I go to Sally's Beauty supply as well as the new Beauty Spot in St Mary's Square and I actually prefer the new one more than Sally's because it has the supplies I need for my hair. It's not black owned but a guy from Africa owns it and he happens to be very nice. Gave me a nice discount on my first purchase. Sally's has never done that but I don't think they need my business or support either.

Have you actually been? I know this is a far cry from Beverly Hills, CA but they have places like this all over that city. I think next to a gym (not to give the gym competition) is a great idea not to mention we need businesses that will bring up the style in the community. If they will have poetry night I am all for it.
Demographics. This area does not have the demographics to support it. Beverly Hills does (that place is full of stupid people!).

Again, have you been? Are you opposed to a flavored water treat? Are you opposed to a health food store? Are you opposed to a place that does poetry night? Or may offer wireless connections for laptops? What is your biggest issue? That's it's water?

I suppose people thought it stupid when the FIRST bottled water was put out on the market too. Then stores including food establishments starting selling it. I may not always purchase water from take-out places but I have and know that a lot of people have. But, I am not going to knock this place even after I try it. If it survives it survives if it doesn't then it doesn't. None of us will be affected.

This area does have the demographics. If the store was up by Best Buy it would definately be more successful.

Wildewood shopping center or in Leonardtown to be exact. But I guess he has his reasons for putting it in The Park. I definitely need to go. What time are you thinking of heading there?

I don't oppose it at all. I'm just telling you that it's a poor business choice. It fills a niche, but is it a niche that anybody was actually looking for? I think the answer to that is "no".

I still think bottled water is stupid. It's biggest reason for surviving is convenience. Some people think that it's better for you (the same Beverly Hills people), but most just go bottled because of portability.

I disagree on both points. I think if it was near BestBuy, it would fail even faster because Panera would crush it. They actually chose a decent location because of the proximity to a gym and not much competition close-by, but the volume in the area is lacking.

Well I will wait to see what he does. From what is being said the water is his start but poetry night is sounding on point and I can see the college students getting into it as well. Go in at least and look around Ylexot then come back and share with the class. :flowers:

This area needs to be embraced by different style and trends, it's growing and a lot of people are moving here coming from many places so variety and change can't be a bad thing. I mean to be honest, he could've opened up a dance club like the Classics or The Legend or Love. I mean his son is in the music industry.

Maybe it's a front, and doesn't plan on making any money from the store at all.. Love a good conspiracy..

that would be a good way to launder money. It is hard to track how much water you are really selling.

So by poetry.. do you mean like Frost, or DefJam?? Because I'm thinking it's not really about poetry as much as Rap or HipHop..

Yes, a front. How did you figure it out. :jameo:

Once Kanye finally becomes Jesus he will change all of the water into wine and the poetry into the gospel according to rap.

You know, my first knee jerk reaction was, "What? A water-cafe? Gimme a break - who's going to go somewhere for the water?"

But the more I've read about it, it actually it sounds like it's just a regular trendy cafe with smoothies, food and occiasional entertainment, and the 'pure water' theme is just kind of a gimmick or a hook.

I hope it works out. We could always use more entertainment, and places to just hang out around here.

If that store stays in business for more than 6 months I will be shocked.
You'd be surprised at the stuff people will buy. I predict he'll do quite well.
