I saw this: The Fairfax County Animal Shelter is also offering temporary housing from the cold for cats, dogs or small companion animals. If you or someone you know needs to utilize this service, call the shelter at 703-324-0208 or e-mail FCPDPetResources@fairfaxcounty.gov.

I wonder if any of our local shelters can or will be doing the same for people who have no where to take their outdoor pets?

I hate to see animals left outside in this weather, their owners should be beaten.

me too slotpuppy. I called animal control today to report some dogs that seem to be left outside all the time far from the house on a short chain. Just makes me sick. Why have a dog then treat them like that?

I pass by a house in White Sands every week with a pen full of beagles that would break your heart. Just a sorry excuse for a shelter even in good weather. The guys an obvious hunter but there's just no excuse to justify leaving them out in weather like this. Saw maybe a dozen of them late this afternoon all huddled in a pile with at least 2 puppies and maybe more. I know they're out they're now and it just eats me up.

If it makes you all feel any better:

Squirrels, raccoons, deer, etc, are living outside right now just fine. There's no reason to think that cats wouldn't be fine as well. A dog on a chain with no shelter, that's one thing, but cats are like teenagers - they manage to survive and thrive despite their lack of common sense.

I tried to bring the cats in and Gidget refused outright; Kiki came in for a little bit, long enough to shed all over my comforter and puke on my chair, then she was scratching to get back out.

Screw the wild varmints! J/K

They're not chained but not really protected from the elements either. Just a tarp over a pen full of sh!t.

If they are a beloved pets, they should be inside. Wharf, your pets have the luxury of love, warmth, and great music. Lucky critters!

Just about all Counties have issued warnings to the public to bring in all pets. If you called animal control they would go there and politely ask the resident to take his dogs inside.

Calvert scanner /Animal Control just had a call to check the welfare of a bunch of German Shepherds in cages in a back yard. The call sounded like they had been there before....

Lucky for him, my fat cat was able to find a warm spot in the pantry. On top of my reusable grocery bags!

Looks just like the cat that comes around my place that I feed. You live in Mechanicville around 5/235 split?

I have a cat that lives in my barn. (S)He is fat and happy living in there. Boy goes up every day and cleans the litter box, checks the water level (takes hot water when it's freezing out) and food bin. We took an old heavy styrofoam cooler and cut an opening in 1 end, then put it upside down (with the lid on for bottom insulation) with a small rug in it and put it in the barn for the cat. Put a little catnip in the cooler to get the cat to investigate. Will have to ask him tonight if the cat went in.

I want one of those !!!!!!! The wood stove .......

There's 5 more just out of frame lounging on the furniture. Not uncommon to see a few of them getting halfway under the stove. Wish they all had the option.

The wood stove...going on 15 years with it. Best money we ever spent. The dogs love it more than we do.
