Kids + boats

Hard to decide whether this should be here or the outdoor section, but here goes....

So, who here has a kid(s) and a boat, and how early did you put the kids on the boat? We're dying to get our daughter out with us on ours, but she's still very young. And she's our first, so we're still not always sure about what things that she can and can't do.

How old were your kids for their first boat rides, and in what type of boat? We are thinking that she is just about old enough to ride with us on our parents' larger powerboat, but our small sailboat just isn't safe enough. Heels over too easily, with WAY too many lines and other moving parts aboard.

Any age is fine for a kid. Just make sure they wear a life jacket.

Please keep the kid away from the sailboat!! :barf: Why ruin such a young life? Put em on the POWERBOAT so they'll have FUN!!

Our boy's were 6 months old when we started taking them out on the boat. We had a small 19' cuddy cabin then and the only place we went with them in tow was the intercoastal water way. This was in Va. Bch and of course they always had a infant life vest on.

Coast guard regulations advise against taking children under 3 to water because of the quality of the lifejackets and the increased probability of drowning or hypothermia due to the lack of body size.

How would one suffer from hypothermia in 85 degree water in August?

We took my daughter on my brothers boat when she was around 2 but I was a nervous wreck because I kept thinking she would fly up when we hit a wave. We weren't even going fast either. She did wear a life jacket and all but all I could picture was her hitting the water. As you can tell I'm not really into boating.
