Kindergarten homework...

My girl had very little at that age, if any. Even now she doesn't have much (6th grade). She can get everything done in about a half hour.

My son gets is homework on Monday's and it's due back on Friday. You can work at your own pace, but they do have it labeled "Monday" "Tuesday" etc...

Each day usually has 2 activities. And of course, Fridays, they ask that you read a book and log it on a sheet of paper for the Book It program.

I'm just curious, because boy has it just about every single night. He'll havej to do a worksheet and then write sentences on the back. And he has to read a book every night for Book-It. We read books anyways, but sometimes we dont' remember to color in the circle for Book-It.

Yeah our son, too. But the good thing about getting it on Mondays is that you can work at your own pace. Sometimes he gets sloppy and just is not cooperating and I put it away to do for the next night.

Tonight he will have to pick his favorite shape and find an item in our home that matches and draw it. Then write the name of the shape and label the picture as well. That counts as 1 activity.

We read alot as well. Here in Calvert, they get a sheet with a goal on it at the start of the month. For December it's 5 books and I'll turn it in before Christmas break.

Wow, our goal for December is 15 or something.

My kids go to the same school as Nicole's and had the same thing in Kindergarten.

My nephew is in K this year and he has TONS of homework. If my kids brought home that much in Kindergarten we wouldn't have done it!

OK, this really worries me. The poor kids are 5 years old. How much homework should they have to do at that age? Hubby & I don't have children yet - first one is due in March. I'm beginning to wonder what the heck I'll need to teach our son before he goes to Kindergarten. I'll be working from home after he's born so we don't have to pay for/put him in daycare. I'll be the one helping him learn what he needs to as hubby works really long hours. I would hate for him to be the "slow one" in class.

I got my degree in early childhood education back in 1995 but it seems that what we learned back then is now out of date. I think they learn a lot more, at a younger age, than they did 13 years ago.

It's starting to take him less time now. He is supposed to do 20 min. of reading, 10 min. of math and then on 2 days of the week he has a worksheet which takes him no time at all and then has sentences one day and another thing on Tuesday. It was a struggle in the beginning but now it is better.

That's what I was kinda wondering. Don't get me wrong, I think much of a child's learning should come from home, but homework EVERY night? Kindergarten is already allll day long. He's already learning to write sentences and he's 1/2 way through kindergarten.

They def. need to know alot more entering Kindergarten than before. The first thing my son's teacher told us was "This is not the Kindergarten you might remember". Learning your ABC's and writing your name was something you were taught in K before... Now they are expected to know it before they even get there.

I think there was 1 little boy who could not write his name yet in my son's class so I know the teacher spent alot of time helping him with that.

I taught my son his ABC's, #'s, colors, how to write the letters, his name... We didn't get started on the sounds the letter make, which is a BIGGIE for learning to read, which is the ultimate goal in Kindergarten, IMO. They also will be able to write 3 complete sentences by the end of the year.

This is all new to me, as he is my oldest, but I have two right behind him... It gives me a little jump start on what to be teaching them at home so they will have that advantage.

I do not think my son's homework is alot at all, but Cowgirl's son seems like he has alot.

Here in Calvert it's not to much. I think my daughter had the most in first but she had a very tough teacher. Now homework is done different. Each week a member of the "team" makes up the homework. So each teacher in each grade gets a turn. It's all pretty simple now.

My nephew goes to school in St. Mary's. BUT I have a friend who's kid is in the same grade and school as my nephew but has a different teacher and he hardly has any homework.

My son's third grade teacher really doesn't believe in homework. He might have 1 sheet a week to do. He gets it on Monday and it's due back Friday. Takes him at the most 5 minutes. She is a hands on teacher which is great for him but I worry about next year when it's back to the "boring" way.

Oh and I feel you on the outdated stuff. Trying to help my kids with their work is a NIGHTMARE. They are taught different ways for math. Everything has different names. So I try to teach the way I learned and I get told "that's not right mom".

My kids teachers have always told us that homework should be 10 minutes for each grade. So first grade is 10, 2nd is 20, 3rd is 30 and so on. When my son was in K we were told that homework wasn't even required in K.

Yeah, I agree that they should have homework in Kindergarten. Even nightly hw doesn't really bother me as long as it doesn't take them too long to complete. I think it's a long day for a 5 yr old as it is.

His homework takes a good half hour, especially when he has to write sentences.

Oh and when you teach your child to write... be prepared.. Calvert County uses D'nealian D'Nealian Handwriting

This was the hard for my oldest. We moved to Calvert when she started First Grade. She had learned "regular" writing at home, pK and K

I was joking with hubby & my Mom recently. I told them that I should go back to working with children (stopped in 1998) just so I can see what they're being taught in daycares, school, etc. I, of course, plan to teach our son the basics....to write his name, numbers, letters, colors & shapes, all that good stuff. But I guess that may not be enough. So they are learning to read in kindergarten? Hmmmm, I sure feel old now!
