Kindergarten homework...

Here in Calvert it's not to much. I think my daughter had the most in first but she had a very tough teacher. Now homework is done different. Each week a member of the "team" makes up the homework. So each teacher in each grade gets a turn. It's all pretty simple now.

My nephew goes to school in St. Mary's. BUT I have a friend who's kid is in the same grade and school as my nephew but has a different teacher and he hardly has any homework.

My son's third grade teacher really doesn't believe in homework. He might have 1 sheet a week to do. He gets it on Monday and it's due back Friday. Takes him at the most 5 minutes. She is a hands on teacher which is great for him but I worry about next year when it's back to the "boring" way.

Oh and I feel you on the outdated stuff. Trying to help my kids with their work is a NIGHTMARE. They are taught different ways for math. Everything has different names. So I try to teach the way I learned and I get told "that's not right mom".

The school I used to work at also had a "team" concept for teaching. It worked pretty well because it helped to ensure that no matter what teacher a child had, they would basically learn the same things as everyone else in their grade. Prior to that, there was no consistency so as the children went to the next grade they were all on different levels. Is that sort of how it works here in Calvert?

As for the math, I can't wait for that nightmare to begin! I can remember how my parents felt trying to help my brother & I with math homework. I'm sure it's only worse now! :yikes:

Pretty much.. They all follow the state curriculum... They move through it pretty quick to. Wait until the benchmark test and the MSAs:cds::cds::cds::cds:

Oh and when you teach your child to write... be prepared.. Calvert County uses D'nealian D'Nealian Handwriting

This was the hard for my oldest. We moved to Calvert when she started First Grade. She had learned "regular" writing at home, pK and K

Hmmm, I guess it makes sense but I had never even heard of it! I'll have my little one writing the entire alphabet by the time he's 3! :killingme

Thanks for the heads up. What the heck else do I need to know? I've decided......I'm keeping you in mind (and a few others) to pm a million questions to in the future!

Yes, I hate that. When my son first starting doing that, I was like.. WTH? I figured it was suppose to get them ready for cursive.

 I had never heard of it either. Some teachers could care less about handwriting. I was glad it went off the report card when you get to third grade. All 3 of my kids ALWAYS get C's in handwriting.

That's what they say. BUT My oldest only worked on Cursive at the end of 2nd grade and in 3rd. After that it's like cursive doesn't exist anymore.

I was kind of hoping that my son wrote better in cursive than print. His hand-writing is horrible. He rushes through everything and most of the time I make him erase it and write it legible. I have to fill out forms for my husband too because his hand-writing sucks too.

Yea Right
ARE you kidding me, this is what is wrong with kids today! School starts at Pre-K...right? Why should they not get homework in kindergarden? Because they are 5? I am a 24 YO and ever since I can remember we had homework every night. This is what school is about, It is not "daycare" or "play dates" it is SCHOOL. Help these children of the next generation become better than the last...:buddies:

My kiddo has always had very little homework, and she excels in school and gets all A's and a couple B's each time and always has. She also LOVES school, I believe that if she had a ton of homework to do every night she and most kids would just kind of shut down and not enjoy school at all. Therefore would not learn as much.

p.s. I also HATE HATE HATE BCR's and all of the standardized testing.

Sure they do...on the playground and at home. A few minutes of homework is not going to kill them. I'm happy to sit down with my son for 15 minutes a day to work with him. Even on the nights that he doesn't have homework, we still sit down to practice writing letters and numbers.

I agree! I have a daughter that is in 2nd grade and she has hardly any homework! I have emailed the teacher and everything to find out why. Teacher tells me that they do enough in school and homework should only take 10 minutes a night and then they should read for 20 minutes every night. The homework every night is to write 5 sentences. That takes my daughter about 3 minutes! This really gets me because we are a military family and the standards are different any place you go.

Like me, I didn't go to Pre-K at all. Is it required here?

They have to make assignments based on the average kid.

My kindergartner usually gets 3 assignments a week. She gets it all on Friday and it's due on Thursday. The instructions say to spread it out over 3 days, but she generally does it in one sitting of about 20 minutes.

My 2nd grader gets about 20 -30 minutes worth of homework each night (not counting that he's supposed to read for 15 minutes) and finishes it in 10-15 minutes.

My 5th grader on the other hand gets what should take the average kid about an hour and it takes him 3-4 hours...every daym night :banghead:

It is mandatory in a lot of places. Why wouldn't anybody want their child to go to Pre K?
Because public schools offer spots to less than 10% of children of the appropriate age. A good private pre-k is expensive and daycare centers that like to pretend they are pre-k's don't do anything any conciencious parent can't do at home.
