why would stock cars be limited to 100 mph?

They weren't that great. None of them raced a full season. At best they ran 5 races out of an entire season. You forgot to add AJ Foyt , Dan Gurney and Mario Andretti to the list of successful open wheel and stock car racing drivers.

Uhhhh...yea. Put your "stock" cars out there against....hell an ARCA car. You'll be lapped on the first lap.
None of whom excelled in NASCAR.You forgot to add AJ Foyt , Dan Gurney and Mario Andretti to the list of successful open wheel and stock car racing drivers.

I know your opinion on NASCAR using the word "stock" in their acronym but be real for a second. No stock car can get on these tracks and pump out the speed or safety these cars do. In fact, if you did race "stock" cars today, you'd have a lot of dead drivers. Cars weren't even stock back in your era.Why do you think a "stock" car would be slow?
Ford stil has an engineering dept and isn't run by a government committee

Wha????why do you think what's currently being sold to the public would remain unchanged if there was a requirement to put a "stock car" on the track?
None of them were consistantly succesful in NASCAR.Are you kidding!
They are the greatest American Race Drivers ever!
They raced in many forms of racing around the world and succeeded.
They won in everything they raced.

AJ Foyt - 7 wins in 30 years. Never raced a full season. Hell he never even won in F1. A.J. Foyt Career Statistics - Racing-Reference.info
Dan Gurney - 5 wins in 10 years. Never raced a full season. Only 4 wins in F1. Dan Gurney Career Statistics - Racing-Reference.info
Mario Andretti - 1 win in 4 years. Never raced a full season. Did have 12 wins in 14 years in F1. Mario Andretti Career Statistics - Racing-Reference.info
None even close to Tony Stewart! (37 wins in 11 years)
So again in general, open wheelers do not do well in NASCAR.
I agree they may be great in their field but the thread topic is about open wheelers failing in NASCAR.None of them raced a full season in NASCAR yet they were still able to win in major NASCAR races. They all won many races in all forms of racing they competed in. They won at Lemans, Sebring, Daytona 24, Indy, F1, NASCAR, etc.
Tony is a great driver (having won at Indy and Nascar), I agree, but does not compare to AJ, Mario, or Dan.
You need to look at each drivers versitility and accomplishments and compare.

The sport has evolved. And since they've come out with this Car of Tomorrow, they are pretty much all equal.Well, the true meaning of Stock can be related to the current bike races.. they are truly the closest thing to stock on the track, and most of them are still alive.
The idea behind STOCK was the manufacturer had to produce 'X' amount (500 rings true to me) production cars for public sale before they could race or put a car on the track.
THAT meant it was STOCK.
Now imagine, with people clamoring for the Dodge Charger and Challenger the bidding wars for a TRUE race car coming from the factory.
Take the factory car to the track, like a REAL Chevy, add some additional safety... maybe flatten the turns a little at the superspeedways.. or make them tighter.. and RACE!!
Now everyone drives the same frame, the same suspension, the same 2 or 3 engines.. and drive in circles for 3 hours. You may have a better driver, but where's the competition off the track to BUILD the better car!?
And what really gets me, is at the track they still have the Ford and Chevy fanatics cheering on "Their Brand".
14 races over 30 years? You call that success?? Gimmee an effing break!!Right on! They won a total of 14 races in 158 NASCAR starts. That in my eyes is successful. An 8.8% win rate. That is good! (Not to mention an IROC championship)
